There are a lot of monsters that call the Yggdrasil home. Sure, cold hard steel and explosive gunpowder can usually get the job done, but sometimes a little more “oomph” is required when dealing with these pesky beasts. Thankfully, the Celestrian’s Warlock class provides a magical spark to these engagements. On Aug. 25, a sleek white-and-red Nintendo 2DS system with the New Super Mario Bros. 2 game pre-installed is hitting store shelves. And just recently, the New Nintendo 2DS XL system launched in stores the same day as two awesome new games: Hey! PIKMIN, a new type of Pikmin game, and Miitopia, a charming, personalized adventure starring Mii characters. Picture this if you will, a young boy on Christmas opening a package to find a Nintendo Gamecube. That in and of itself is exciting but when this console is accompanied by Super Smash Brothers Melee and Pikmin this young boy knows he is in for something new. Back in 2001 I remember opening up Pikmin and popping it into my Gamecube. I was so excited to play this game, little did I know I was going to regret this excitement. Pikmin is one of those games where everything you do is critical. As a young boy I had never come across a game like it before. I had never played a game where if you do something wrong, you risk even being able to complete the game. I was and still am not the best and these types of games. It can often take the fun out of it for me.

Hey Pikmin however, feels like a great introduction to this cute series. You meet all of the wonderful Pikmin and Olimar, and it is like a simpler game that could certainly bring in new fans to the series. I am sure my younger self would have enjoyed playing this game before being dropped into an alien world. Through ultimately playing Pikmin I learned something new about games, that this kind of challenge can be good for you.

Hey Pikmin starts off like all other Pikmin games with Olimar traveling through space. He soon crashes and is told he needs to collect. This time he has to collect Sparklium and 30000 pieces of it. This is done primarily by collecting shiny buds. The game itself is a platformer like anyone knew from Nintendo and their footage. It throws out the old style in favor of a platformer and it works surprisingly well. The demo itself only shows off two levels, and both contain red Pikmin , with additionally containing Rock Pikmin as well. The Red pikmin are light and the Rock Pikmin break whatever they hit if possible, and you lead them and use them like in any other Pikmin game. Of course, you collect items that Olimar nicknames., and there is one item in the demo that made me smile.

All in all this demo is in a way like a soft reboot. Now, obviously we won’t lose the original style games but this like a simpler game to entice younger players in. Again I really think my younger self would have enjoyed playing this instead of the original Pikmin games. But honestly, I realize that Pikmin might not have become what it is today if this was its start. It is a solid game but it does leave some to be desired, then again it really isn’t meant to be all that challenging.

 

Hey Pikimin launches July 28th for the 3DS Family of Systems, the same day as Miitopia.Feel free to try out the demo and find out for yourself what you think of this new entry in the loved Pikmin series! While it may not be the best game in the series the demo is at least worth giving a chance too!He

Ever since I first set eyes on this Oasis I knew I wanted to play this game. After seeing game play and then trying out the demo I knew I had found another game to enjoy. Ever Oasis really is such a great game, and is is a game that just shimmers. It has cute characters and even some of it’s villains are cute too. The interactions between the hero and Esna are such a big part of the game., and you feel when your seedling gets hurt and are overjoyed when he is.

Ever Oasis is half Dungeon Crawler and Half Oasis Builder. You need to be working on both parts or your Oasis will decline. As you get deeper into the game you really need to keep working on your Oasis. The dungeon crawling is fun and can be quick paced. You need to fight monsters and change your team on the fly. With different races and weapons you will work to figure things out. You will also learn skills which may or may not help out depending on the situation.

The Oasis is your home and you need to make it great. By working on it you not only gain money but you help out people living in the desert. It is a nice diversion from all the fighting. You can complete quests and get closer to your villagers even if its brief. These characters will offer more quests and soon will sell even more goods. Of course with more goods, you will gain more money.

This game might seem like a lot sometimes, but it is totally worth it. As you travel through dungeons you will gain many items, which will be necessary to sell. It really can seem tedious as you travel back and forth between dungeons and the Oasis. But the developers have made it easy with the inclusion of the Aqua Gates. Using Aqua Gates makes traveling back and forth quite instantaneous. Plus, it makes it easier to save when you need to.

The story really plays into the characters and you can play the game quite easily by simply learning which monsters are weak to which weapons. If you want a game that has both exploration and a little town building then this game really is for you. It might not be the longest game but there is something about this game that makes replaying it an appealing thought. It is simple enough that newbies can get into it but also robust enough to sate true RPG Fan’s and their appetites. You can pick up Ever Oasis at stores or on the Nintendo EShop. The Oasis needs you and your seedling to save the day, don’t let Esna down!

I have always been a fan of RPG’s and have wanted to at least attempt to make an RPG for awhile. With RPG Maker FES for 3DS which came out on June 27th, I now have that chance. RPG Maker FES is actually quite the robust game. With this maker you can make any sort of RPG you can think of. Although you need to use in game assets it still is quite the treat. Playing this game, I cannot help but think of a myriad of games to make. I just want to delve deep into this maker and show off my worlds that appear in my mind. I feel like I could make countless games, and even honor some of my closest friends with games. This game could certainly take hours of time if played in earnest as it is really quite robust.

Even though you can’t upload your own images you can make any characters you want. Plus, you can really fiddle with the strength of the monsters and make them into whatever you want. You can even set them up into groups and unleash them on your unsuspecting heroes. Making weapons, armor and items is also part of the fun. You can make them godly or weak or anywhere in between. Plus, you can even make your own magic spells. Simply fiddling with these aspects certainly could take awhile as there is so much to twist to your will.

Now, you can always take it easy with samples but it really is the best working things out yourself. This game wants you to succeed and by showing you a sample you figure things out. There aren’t any tutorials so this game really just wants you to work to learn for yourself. Not only can you make maps of various sizes, but you can really do what you want. You really have free reign and that is what makes this game so appealing. You can make as many games as you want and really make them as you wish.

I might not be the biggest fan of maker type games, but there is something about making your own RPG. Having played so many RPG’s it feels good to have my own crack at it. This game is something I feel like I can play when I want and try things out. Just a fun diversion that could lead to fantastic things in the future. Plus, the greatest thing about it is that if you want you can share your games and let others play them. Plus, if they don’t own the game they can still play the games through a small download.

RPG Maker FES is a game that is certainly worth playing for anyone who likes RPG’s. While it might be tedious at times it is certainly something that when you finish it, you will feel good about it.

No GravatarI rarely find myself playing games involving numbers anymore but recently I was able to try out a new game for myself. Pic A Pix Color is a simple game on the 3DS and is rather cheap as it is only 5 dollars. This game certainly has a simple premise and that is to solve little puzzles.

These puzzles revolved around creating pictures with numbers noting how many of color will show up. Of course, as you play more puzzles they get harder and harder. With 100 puzzles to play you certainly have a lot to play. This game might be perfect for someone who enjoys puzzle games or even someone who just wants to get a little light stress challenge gaming in. You could say, play a puzzle a day for 100 days and see how good you feel.

This game doesn’t end there though as there are even time trials to complete. If you complete a puzzle in a good time and don’t ask for help, you will be awarded a medal. This game is certainly something you could play multiple times if you wanted to have the satisfaction of clearing it as fast as possible.

With 10 dollars worth of DLC, you can even get more puzzles to play all of the varying difficulty. While not my favorite game, it was certainly worth playing, and it is a steal for those who truly love puzzles and numbers. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, then you should get it as 5 dollars truly is a steal for a game.

No GravatarEver Oasis was announced last year at E3 2016 for 3DS. While it has taken awhile the game is finally coming on the 23rd of this year. After a stellar showing of the game at E3 this year we were given a demo to try out before the game’s launch.

Ever Oasis is a beautiful game and is created so wonderfully for the 3DS family of systems. This game involves a young hero named Tethu teaming up with a water spirit named Esna. These two heroes work together to not only stop evil but to revitalize an Oasis.

This game is fun because you not only can grow and replenish an oasis but you get to meet great characters while doing it. There are also dungeons to travel through and many are randomized.

This demo took a little bit of each part of the gameplay to deliver a nice trial. The demo starts with a bit of story and then thrusts you into the life of the main character Tethu.

While exploring this world different villagers will come to visit and ask you to complete quests. In my time playing the demo I was tasked to find a certain amount of an item for a small character, the same race as Tethu.

I was soon approached by a lizard-like character who wanted to join me on my quest. Running through the desert we took down monsters. Finding the cactus pulp we brought it back and she was appeased.

We weren’t done yet and soon ended up in a dungeon, where a third character joined us. My trio worked together to take down foes and then a boss of sorts. There was even something that was not accessible because we didn’t have a shovel.

Heading back having done all this new villager wanted, she professed that she wanted to set up shop in my oasis. Of course, you need to say yes as who doesn’t want a juice shop. It was also revealed that she, in fact, is a master with a shovel.

All in all this demo got me even more excited for this game. You not only get to heal up a horrid desert but you also get to battle enemies and travel through puzzle-filled dungeons.

The characters are well designed and all have their own powers and attitudes. If you haven’t played this demo yet, try it out, the Oasis needs help and you are the only one who can help Tethu and Esna save it!

No GravatarE3 week has rolled around yet again and that can mean only one thing:  It’s the perfect time to look at your backlog!

Wait, what?  But Days Gone is coming and there’s  Anthem from Bioware and Destiny 2 and Super Mario Odyssey and The Last Night looks fantastic and and and ad nauseam!  This isn’t when you want to look at old games!  Or is it?  The average gamer has more games than they have time to play these days.  On top of that, the industry has normalized the idea of preordering games up to several years in advance just to get your foot in the door when they come out, even though virtually no preordered titles get under-printed.  So with E3 just getting underway, I thought I’d take a look at all the things I still haven’t played yet…and that’s a lot.

I’ve been collecting since the mid-nineties, ever since I sold my copy of Final Fantasy III for the SNES, decided I wanted to play it again, and then couldn’t find a copy for months.  Ever since then, if I buy a game, I keep it until I play it and decide if I like it.  But in the 90s, games came out much more slowly.  By the time you’d rented the game (yes, you could rent games at a corner mini-mart or video store back then), played it to death, and moved on to something else, the next game you were waiting for still wasn’t out.  That simply isn’t the case anymore.  There are so many games out and coming out that it’s hard to even keep track of what might be interesting, let alone everything that’s been released.  And that’s why backlogs are such a problem.  There are more good games coming out than most people have time to even try, much less play through.  Most people simply buy what looks good, get sidetracked, and end up with a bunch of things they don’t even have time to open.  It’s a ridiculous consumer feedback loop that doesn’t benefit anyone but game companies and retail stores.

For example, I still have Super Nintendo games that I haven’t gotten around to playing yet.  I bought them in the nineties!  It’s a habit that becomes a compulsion; the fear of missing out on the next Suikoden II or Shantae or Panzer Dragoon Saga.  What if you don’t buy it and when you go to get it, you can’t afford it anymore?  But will you ever play it?  Do you even have the time?  Assuming you work a 40 hour work week or go to school full time, you likely have limited time for gaming.  Add a commute, a relationship, or even a child to that equation and you have even less.  You might get three to five hours of game time in a week.  The average game takes around 20 hours to complete.  That’s ten weeks to finish one game, assuming you don’t play anything else or get bored of it.  You might be able to finish five games a year at that rate.  Round it up to ten for people with summers off or extra free time.  But even at ten games a year, you aren’t remotely scratching the surface of what comes out in any given year, and that’s just looking at mainstream titles!  If you have PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold, you get four to six games free every month on top of what you purchase.  If you have Steam, GOG (Good Old Games), Origin, or uPlay, you might get another 5-10 games free a year if you pay close attention online.  That’s well over a hundred games excluding retail purchases if you use all of those services.  At an average of 20 hours each, you’re looking at roughly over 2000 hours of gameplay, and following our formula that says we have five hours a week, that backlog becomes 7.7 years of gameplay.

Over seven years of gameplay just in random titles from online services.  Then we add in the AAA titles that most people buy and tend to play more heavily and the average serious gamer has a backlog of up to ten times what they could realistically play at any given time.  A quick look at my collection made me nearly nauseous when I used this formula.  On Steam alone, I have 1003 games, many of which I have never even installed.  For the PS2?  128.  The DS?  101.  The PS1?  72 games.  That’s over 1300 games and doesn’t include about two-thirds of my collection.  And don’t forget about flash carts.  I have access to every single US and Japanese game for the NES, Genesis, Turbografx 16, and DS.  Thousands of titles.   My Steam library averages out to about 77 years of backlog.  Statistically, I will literally die before I can possibly play every game on my Steam account to completion.  An actual, honest-to-goodness lifetime of gaming is at my fingertips at any given moment.  And yet I still I buy games all the time, but I literally cannot play them.  I’ve talked to other gamers that have backlogs on Steam of up to 3000 games.  It’s almost a status symbol for them.

We don’t need this much media.  But as we buy more and more, faster and faster, we show developers that they don’t need to take their time or fully playtest a game for us to buy it.  Half the time, we stick it on a shelf and don’t get to it for six months.  Or a year.  Or five.  Or even ten.  The situation has degraded so much that there are even sites like www.backloggery.com that allow you to track not only your collection but your completion rate as well.  Steam does this for you automatically, and it can be rather disheartening to see right there in black and white.  I’ve been a Steam member for 12 years and I’ve only managed a 13% completion rate.  However, even that is inaccurate because that number is calculated on the achievements you’ve earned, not the games you have finished.  I wouldn’t hesitate to say that most people don’t end up finishing the games they start these days due to the nature and volume of the market, and it almost doesn’t matter that the developers haven’t properly programmed and playtested those games.

So what does all this mean?  To me, it means the market is utterly flooded; inundated with content ranging from indie games to AAA titles to the point where it’s hopelessly diluted and difficult to have a pure gaming experience.  Very few games end up being memorable and at the same time, we’ve created a sub-culture where people brag about all the items they own but never actually use them.  There are too many games and we can’t play most of them.  A lot of the most highly advertised titles end up being terrible too, due to compromises made to appeal to wider audiences.  Reviews are bought and sold like commodities and it’s very difficult to judge for yourself what might be good.  E3 is the perfect example of this, creating massive hype for titles that test well with audiences and critics, overproduced shows of products that won’t be coming out for some time, and generally driving a multi-billion dollar ad campaign that sucks dollars out of the pockets of hard-working people.  As I write this, Xbox has wrapped up their E3 presentations and already most of the bigger titles are available to preorder on Amazon, even though the release dates are as far away as next fall or later.  Money is flying into the pockets of companies as we speak for nothing more than a promise of things to come drifting on the wind.

Gamers need to stop and think about how excited they were for the items that are already sitting on their shelves when they were announced.  We can’t let that feeling of wonder end the second we get the actual product.  If we all stop to play what we already have, perhaps it will make the industry also reconsider the type of games it is releasing and the volume it is releasing them in.  Having a backlog says a lot about a person, but it also speaks volumes to the way marketing and consumer culture affect us as individuals.  That’s a message many of us need to heed more often.   So take a look at your shelf.  Make an effort to try that game you’ve always been meaning to but were never in the mood for.  You might just recapture the magic in gaming by popping in a hidden gem.  And you might find that the entertainment you’ve been scouring the net looking for is something you already had the whole time.

A Contest And An Addendum

In writing the above article and looking at my backlog, I also realized that in addition to a ridiculously large backlog, I also have a ridiculous number of games sitting about unused on my Steam account and other digital accounts.  These are extras I’ve gotten to give as friends, freebies that came with purchases, and just random extra codes I’ve acquired over the years.  I thought to myself, “What better use could I have for all these games than to give them away to people who will play them?”  And so, The Great Real Otaku Gamer Steam Backlog Contest was born!
