Legendary Entertainment has acquired the rights to make a Pokémon movie. Their first planned project is a film based on Detective Pikachu which is to be fast tracked into production

On the heels of Pokemon Go fever, Legendary has closed a deal for the film rights for the iconic Japanese property.

Legendary and The Pokemon Co. on Wednesday announced that they will launch the first Pokemon live-action film franchise based on Detective Pikachu, a new character in the Pokemon universe.

Details on the plot and story of the character are being kept under wraps. The film will be fast-tracked to start production in 2017.

While Pokémon has had many movies based on the franchise, it will be interesting to see a western take on the series, especially with Detective Pikachu as a film project. Detective Pikachu tells the story of a Pikachu who has learned to speak human language and solves mysteries with his human sidekick. There was a fan campaign at one point for the English localization to have Danny DeVito as the voice of the lead character

No GravatarIt looks like Alden Ehrenreich will be the Young Han Solo in a standalone film.  It was revealed at the Star Wars Celebration event in London.

The audition took about six months, including doing multiple screen tests alongside Chewbacca.  Ironically enough, he was the first actor that the directors saw for the role.

The 26 year old actor is known for his role in Hail, Caesar! and Beautiful Creatures.

The Pokemon Company revealed a Pokemon character today via the above trailer. The character is called Volcanion. Here is how the Pokemon is described (via Nintendo Everything):

” Unlike any Pokémon discovered before it, this Pokémon is both Fire and Water type. It uses fire and water to create steam within its body, expelling explosive shock waves and boiling steam from the arms on its back. The power is said to be great enough to blow away an entire mountain, gouging out the earth and changing the shape of the land. “

Its unknown how you’ll be able to get Volcanion. He “can’t be encountered through regular gameplay”. The trailer says “more details coming soon.”

What do you think of this Pokemon?

No GravatarNo, it’s not April Fool’s Day, no you aren’t dreaming. It’s really happening. Spiderman will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Sony Pictures and Marvel studios have reached a deal to introduce Spiderman into an upcoming Marvel movie. After that, Sony and Marvel will co-produce the next Spiderman movie which is set to release on July 28. 2017. The two companies are also discussing the possibilities of bringing in MCU characters into the new Spidey films. Sony will continue to finance and distribute the movies, and well as own and have final creative say on the films. However, Kevin Feige and Marvel will be co-producing films from here on so expect to see heavy involvement from Marvel.

The question on everyone’s mind though is if Sony and Marvel are continuing from the Amazing Spiderman Movies or if we are getting our third reboot of the wall crawler. While the press release say one way or the other, the language does make it seem we are getting a new Peter Parker. Specifically the press release says “… the ‘new’ Spiderman…” It also states that Sony and Marvel “…will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger.” Take from that what you will but one can speculate from that phrasing that they will introduce a new actor to portray the Sony-Marvel Spiderman.

I don’t know about you but I’m pretty excited about this news. Personally, I feel Marvel will get the future Spiderman films onto a better track than where it was headed. I hope all those spin offs (Secret Agent Aunt May? Really???) will be axed and create a better focus on the films than setting up spinoffs. And while I didn’t dislike the Amazing Spiderman films nor the Andrew Garfield I think Marvel will do a much better job. But since Sony has the last say we just have to wait and see what they can do. You can read the full press release here.

No GravatarThe week of October 27th has been slam packed with all kinds of Marvel Cinematic Universe announcements. Perhaps as a way to combat the recent popularity of DC tv and movie popularity, Marvel Studios has just revealed upcoming plans for Phase Three of the MCU with movies planned up until 2019.

At Disney’s El Capitan theater in Los Angeles, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, announced plans for Captain Marvel and Black Panther to get their own movies, along with other sequels and new franchises.

The Schedule

Captain America: Civil War (May 6th, 2016);
Dr. Strange (Nov. 4th, 2016);
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 5th, 2017);
Thor: Ragnarok (July 18th, 2017);
Black Panther (November 3, 2017);
Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1 (May 4th, 2018);
Captain Marvel (July 6th, 2018);
Inhumans (November 2nd, 2018);
Avengers: Infinity War, Part 2 (May 3rd, 2019)

Black Panther will star Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed Jackie Robinson in the movie 42 as well as James Brown in Get On Up. In case you’re not familiar with who Black Panther is, he’s the ruler of a fictional African nation called Wakanda. Vibranium, the metal used in Captain America’s shield, is mined there which has caused the country to be rich and highly technologically advanced. Chadwick Boseman is slated to appear as Black Panther in a total of five upcoming Marvel films, beginning with Captain America: Civil War.

Captain Marvel was also announced to get her own movie, as it was confirmed that this would be the Carol Danvers version of the superhero. She will be Marvel’s first female character to get her own film. This might be disappointing to fans of Black Widow, who were expecting her to have the first female Marvel Universe film, but Feige reassured us that Natasha Romanov would be heavily featured in the rest of the Avengers movies. So far there is no actress confirmed to play Captain Marvel.

Also announced this week is the actor portraying Doctor Strange. Rumors began with actors such as Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, and Joaquin Phoenix. However it’s been confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, The Hobbit) will be portraying the surgeon-turned-Sorcerer Supreme.

Making an event out of announcing Phase Three, Marvel Studios has decided to “go big or go home,” combating DC’s announcement of a Wonder Woman movie and success of Gotham and Constantine. Your move, DC.
