The state of Hawaii will be investigating EA and other companies under claims of predatory practices. This is with regards to Loot Boxes and whether or not they are forcing gambling onto consumers.

This is a major event, because government has not intervened to this extent in gaming in decades. Hopefully some positives will come out of this.

What do you all think?

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) announced today an agreement to acquire Respawn Entertainment, LLC, a leading independent game development studio and creators of AAA shooter and action games including the critically-acclaimed Titanfall™ franchise. Respawn brings to EA the proven leadership and studio talent behind Titanfall and Titanfall 2, two of the most highly-rated shooter titles in the last five years. The acquisition builds on a successful publishing partnership between Respawn and EA, with multiple projects currently in development – a new title in the Titanfall franchise, a game set in the Star Wars™ universe and a VR gaming experience.

“We’ve seen firsthand the world-class caliber of Respawn as a development studio with incredible vision, deep talent and an inspiring creative mindset,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. “Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world. Together, we’ve brought this to life in the Titanfall franchise, and now with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more amazing things in the future.”

“We started Respawn with the goal to create a studio with some of the best talent in the industry, and to be a top developer of innovative games,” said Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment. “We felt that now was the time to join an industry leader that brings the resources and support we need for long term success, while still keeping our culture and creative freedom. EA has been a great partner over the years with Titanfall and Titanfall 2, and we’re excited to combine our strengths. This is a great next step for Respawn, EA, and our players.”

Respawn is the creator and developer of the critically-acclaimed Titanfall franchise that energized the first-person shooter genre with its innovative gameplay. The first game, Titanfall, was published by EA in 2014, and received global recognition with more than 75 top awards. Fans and critics fell in love with the game’s refreshing, fast-paced multiplayer gameplay. Respawn and EA launched Titanfall 2 in late 2016, with a new single-player campaign and expanded multiplayer gameplay, resulting in one of the year’s top-rated shooters.

Respawn will join EA’s Worldwide Studios organization, a global creative collective of leading game development studios bringing to life an unmatched portfolio of top games and services across all major platforms.

Under the agreement, EA will pay $151 million in cash, and up to $164 million in long-term equity in the form of restricted stock units to employees, which will vest over four years. In addition, EA may be required to pay additional variable cash consideration that is contingent upon achievement of certain performance milestones, relating to the development of future titles, through the end of calendar 2022. The additional consideration is limited to a maximum of $140 million. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the calendar 2017 or soon thereafter, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The acquisition is expected to be neutral to EA’s net income in fiscal years 2018 and 2019.

This was not unexpected news. EA has been working closely with Respawn and this was just a matter of time. Hopefully the future is bright for this partnership.

We’ve made changes to crates and progression based on player’s feedback. The Star Wars Battlefront II beta gave us a welcome chance to test all of our systems in action and tune things up for better balance. A few weeks ago, we mentioned we were going to take another look at how the progression system works and after incorporating community feedback, we’re happy to share our plans for launch:

  • Epic Star Cards, the highest tier of Star Cards available at launch, have been removed from Crates
  • You’ll need to reach a certain rank to craft upgraded Star Cards
  • Weapons are locked behind specific milestones
  • Class-specific gear and items can be unlocked by playing as them

We’ll be continuously looking at player feedback to help fine tune and improve this system and others in the game, as we’re committed to keeping the community together including releasing all post-launch content for free and going to make sure that the game is fun for everyone.

These are welcome changes as there were many complaints about the loot crate system. It is good that they are listening to fans and will not just rush blindly into a bad decision.

On the eve of Wednesday’s puck drop to start the 2017-18 NHL regular season, EA SPORTS™ NHL® 18 today released the results of its annual season simulation.

Powered by NHL® 18, the season simulator predicts the Tampa Bay Lightning will triumph over the Edmonton Oilers and take home the Stanley Cup® for the first time since 2004. After an eventful 7-game series and an action-packed 3-2 win in the final game, Tampa Bay Captain Steven Stamkos will lead the team to victory, resulting in the team’s second Stanley Cup® win in franchise history after narrowly missing out in 2015.

A link to the EA SPORTS NHL® 18 blog post detailing the full regular season standings can be found here.

Some other notable predictions from the season simulation include:

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins, led by captain Sidney Crosby, continue their dominance of the Eastern Conference during the regular season and take home the President’s Trophy.
  • NHL® 18 cover athlete Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, for the second year in a row, becomes the most decorated athlete at the NHL Awards®, with back-to-back wins of three major awards – the Hart Memorial Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award. McDavid joins an elite group of multi-year winners of these coveted awards, including Hockey Hall of Famers Guy Lafleur and Wayne Gretzky.
  • Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning will take home the Conn Smythe Trophy for an exceptional post-season performance, as well as the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as highest goal scorer.
  • In their inaugural season, the Vegas Golden Knights fall short a playoff spot finishing 14th overall in the Western Conference.

The EA SPORTS NHL® season simulation is conducted annually by artificial intelligence that uses real-life data from each player. Results are determined by the videogame when two teams match up based on player ratings, line combinations, and include variances such as injuries and hot streaks to give a realistic outcome of a game or series.

After launching for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on September 15, NHL® 18 delivers the creativity of today’s young NHL stars with new Creative Attack controls and the Defensive Skill Stick. Play the fast-paced, arcade-inspired 3-on-3 EA SPORTS™ NHL® THREES mode, or reshape the league entirely with the new Expansion Draft and your own custom 32nd NHL team. Do it all with the most co-op and competitive multiplayer options ever delivered in an EA SPORTS NHL® game.

Today Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) launched EA SPORTS™ NHL® 18, delivering an authentic, fun and fast-paced hockey experience where the ice is a playground. Featuring new Creative Attack controls, an all-new Defensive Skill Stick, Creative A.I. and a brand-new 3-on-3 gameplay experience, NHL® 18 captures the skill and creativity displayed by today’s young superstars. On top of that, players can do it all with the most co-op and competitive multiplayer options ever delivered in an EA SPORTS NHL® game.

With the introduction of the NHL® THREES mode, NHL® 18 now offers over-the-top 3-on-3 hockey action complete with unique arenas and new commentary. The arcade-inspired mode features faster gameplay, bigger hits and high-scoring action that can be experienced through both couch co-op and fully competitive online team play. Featuring a new NHL® THREES Campaign Mode that can be offline or in co-op with a friend, players compete against different teams and leagues in a circuit-style journey, where they can unlock objective-based rewards as they progress through the campaign.

“There’s a generational shift happening in the NHL right now where younger players like Connor McDavid are bringing more speed, skill and creativity to the game than we’ve ever seen before,” said Sean Ramjagsingh, Sr. Producer, NHL® 18. “We’re so excited to bring that to life in NHL 18 with features that reflect that new NHL® like insane skill moves and faster, 3-on-3 hockey.”

Gameplay in NHL® 18 has never looked so good, with new Creative Attack moves, which gives players the control to execute jaw-dropping plays. On offense, creative dekes include between-the-legs moves, one-handed dekes, and the ability to branch moves together for quick play-by-play decision making. On defense, the Defensive Skill Stick gives players full control of their stick to take away passing lanes, deflect shots and poke the puck away. The tool allows players to counter attacks with poke check targeting, extended poles, and controlled stick sweeps to cover zones of the ice.

NHL® 18 has also expanded on the popular Franchise Mode, to include a new Expansion Draft feature that lets players reshape the entire NHL by adding and drafting a 32nd team. Through the Expansion Draft, players can run an authentic draft experience to build a dynamic roster as well as take on the front office role to manage the team, the business and the games. Start with a hometown for the 32nd team from cities across North America and Europe, then use the Creation Zone to choose an arena, design a uniform and a logo, and for the first time ever – design their very own custom mascot. Players can also use NHL Expansion Draft™ to experience the Las Vegas Knights™ first, complete with authentic rosters, uniforms and logos.

Finally, NHL® 18 introduces more ways to team up and compete in multiplayer than ever before. Featuring over 64 different combinations of multiplayer gameplay – including the ability to create a team of local couch players combined with online players from their own console – no other EA SPORTS game lets you team up and play with your friends like NHL® 18.

NHL® 18 is developed by EA Vancouver and is available now worldwide for Xbox One and PlayStation®4. To learn more about NHL® 18, visit www.easports.com/nhl/. Visit www.easports.com/nhl/buy for more information on purchase offers and to buy NHL® 18.

American McGee’s Alice series is one with a large cult following. Many have wanted another game, which hasn’t happened but if things go right, that may change.

According to his twitter account, American McGee has began pitching a new Alice game to EA, tentatively titled “Alice: Asylum”. McGee is asking for fan support to show EA there is indeed demand for the game.

This proposal will include artwork, design outline, and financial/business model. When this proposal is finished (and assuming all the numbers and constraints make sense) it’ll be sent to EA. You can show your support for this effort by signing up to the mailing list below.

Are you a fan of the Alice series? Then you just may want to show your support.
