Disney and Netflix has announced that a multi original live action deal with Marvel. Bringing four superheroes to Netflix exclusively for their own original show beginning in 2015.

The first superhero to appear will be Daredevil. The last time we saw a live adaptation of Daredevil was the movie adaptation from 20th Century Fox staring Ben Affleck. Following Daredevil will be Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. The focus on the heroes of Hell’s Kitchen in New York, each hero will get a 13 minimum episode series all accumulating in a mini-series crossover event of a reimagining of The Defenders.

Produced by Marvel Television and in association with ABC Television Studios, “This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said President of Marvel Entertainment Alan Fine. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

“Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’ are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

Personally, I’m excited about this news. Marvel has a plethora of superheroes and this is a great way to show off heroes that are less well known. I’ve also been dying for Luke Cage to somehow make his way into live action. This can also be the beginning of a brand new formula for Marvel. If this is successful, we could potentially see many more heroes brought to live action. Nothing more is known about these new projects but we are excited to see what Marvel can do without the pressure of needing a well performing movie.
