No GravatarNow that 2013 has come to an end, it’s a time for lists of what was great.  2013 was an exciting and great year for all gamers! From great game after great game and the introduction of the next generation of consoles from Microsoft and Sony, 2013 did not disappoint. Despite being the busy bee that I am, there’s nothing like relaxing with video games.  For those that may not know, my alias in the gaming world is LadyLoveMonster, hence my title.  Although I spent some time working on a backlog of games that came out before 2013, here are 5 games from 2013 that I enjoyed the most.

Coming in at #5 on my list is Ryse: Son of Rome.  With it’s beautiful visuals and my love of Rome, it’s not hard to wonder why it’s on my list.  Though many have complained of repetitive combat, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing in my book watching the combos result in glorious blood and decapitations that enhance a lot of what made Rome, Rome.  Although Ryse is a rather short game, there is potential with the multiplayer.  Ryse also serves as a beautiful show of what the Xbox One can do and what we may see in the future.

At #4, I’m adding The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.  You can’t go wrong with a Zelda game, especially this game.  I enjoyed being able to play this great game on the go.  The graphics are beautiful and the gameplay is fun.  Here’s to hoping for Ocarina of Ages and Ocarina of Seasons remakes.

SC2: Heart Of the Swarm

Whether or not this counts, Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm is #3 on my list.  Out of all the video games on my list and otherwise, I probably put most of my time for video games in 2013 into this game.  It was a huge improvement from Starcraft 2:  Wings of Liberty, which is saying a lot since I enjoyed that installment quite a bit.  Although the multiplayer aspect of the game is the gem, the campaign was amazing, fun, and had a great story.  There’s nothing like being able to play as Kerrigan and become a part of the swarm.

It is no shocker to anyone that knows me that Pokemon X/Y comes in at #2 on my list.  I have played the Pokemon games since the first generation came out in 1998. What makes Pokemon X/Y so great is this much needed revamp to the video game franchise.  As someone that has been with the video game series since the very beginning, there were different aspects, primarily the visuals and parts of gameplay, that were starting to get stale.  This staleness manifested most for me in Pokemon Black/White and Pokemon Black 2/White 2.  Pokemon X/Y changed that!  The most noticeable upgrade is the visuals!  Pokemon X/Y is the first 3DS game in the series, though reserves the 3D graphics to specific parts of the game like battles.  I personally tend to keep the graphics in the 2D mode, but that doesn’t take away from the game at all.  The story is also improved and I actually found it quite touching when I finished the game. My only complaint at the moment for this game is how easy it can be to get stuck in the GTS waiting for the other player’s decision for what you’re offering in a trade. I’m hoping that improves in time.  In the mean time, I’m also waiting for the Pokemon Bank and PokeTransporter to finally make it’s way to North America at the measly fee of $4.99 per year. Due to issues, it was not released on the intended launch of December 27, 2013 and we have yet to hear word on when it will be launched. Despite these issues, Pokemon is a simple pleasure with plenty of continued play value if you’re into filling up the Pokedex and competitive battle.

Finally, coming in at #1, BioShock Infinite was my favorite game of 2013.  I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals, music, gameplay, and story.  For those that haven’t gotten around to playing this game yet, I highly recommend picking it up.  It’s a great experience all around, especially if you love a good story that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire ride. BioShock Infinite’s story is so rich and engaging entrancing you with a unique take of the time period with an Ayn Rand twist (as the BioShock games do very well with).  If there’s anything that I look for most in games, it’s the story and BioShock Infinite excels.

Some may wonder why other great games that came out in 2013 are not on my list, but the reasons are fairly simple.  For some games, I may not have had the opportunity to get around to playing them. I’m in graduate school so it can get difficult to play as much as I wish I could.  For other games like The Last of Us, which I know many loved, it wasn’t a game I could get through because of those darn clickers.  I prefer to not play horror-esque games that leave me with nightmares.  That does not mean that it wasn’t great or that other games weren’t great.  This list comes down to my personal preferences with the genres I like to dabble in. With the end of 2013, a great year in gaming, there is a lot of anticipation for what’s to come in 2014.  Look for a list of what I’m most excited for in 2014 soon. No GravatarAs one of my most anticipated games for PAX Prime, The Elder Scrolls Online did not disappoint. ESO, as it is known, takes place in Tamriel 1,000 years before Skyrim.

Although they claim it’s a little deeper (I’ll let you know after I play the full game), the hour I spent with ESO felt like Skyrim with friends. Which is exactly what I wanted.

There are some differences, including combat, which felt slightly different, and the weapon and armor equipping, which no longer seems class-constrained.

The controls are something I can’t speak on much, as I played Skyrim on PS3, but it seemed smooth and the hotkeys made sense. I had no trouble hopping right into the game.

Plot

You play an adventurer whose soul was stolen by Molag Bal. Fight to get your soul back and bring order back to Tamriel.

These three alliances are fighting for control of the Imperial City, which is currently without a ruler.

Gameplay

I began my playthrough as if it was just Skyrim, finding NPCs to talk to and completing quests. This was all well and good until I ran into the first quest that gave me a bit of trouble. I tried two or three times to get through the quest. Then, on what would have been my fourth death, someone stepped into the fight and started helping me.

And that’s when I realized I was playing the game all wrong. I joined up with a team, and we set off on the silent adventure of three grim strangers, united in a single task. Guarding each others’ backs, looking to the boldest among us to be the leader (it just seemed right), and looting responsibly.

It was so much fun, and I cannot wait to play the full game!

No GravatarLast week I had the opportunity to visit Australia’s first Penny Arcade Expo, or PAX. The event was a huge success and a great experience. In this article I’ll give you a taste of what I got to see and play there!

The event showcased everything from tabletop games, indie titles and developers right up to major titles such as Assassin’s Creed IV, Saint’s Row IV and League of Legends. There were also many accessory and hardware manufacturers there showing off their latest headsets, gaming peripherals and super powered PCs. A whole host of international developers and companies showed up for panels and Microsoft even presented their Xbox One with live demos on stage.

The standout booths from the show were the World of Tanks and League of Legends stands, taking up a massive amount of space and drawing huge numbers of gamers. The League of Legends booth was packed full for all three days, hosting the first major Oceanic tournaments.

The expo featured a few other major gaming booths from Ubisoft, Nintendo and a Rome Total War 2 theatre – each showcasing new demos and game presentations for many upcoming titles such as Assassin’s Creed IV, Watch Dogs, Rome Total War 2, Saints Row IV, Splinter Cell Blacklist and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

There was a huge focus on indie titles in the main arena – One of the highlights was Freedom Fall, which I previewed and reviewed before the event here. Their booth had a great atmosphere and some brilliant cosplay to publicize the game

Other indie titles of note included Antichamber, Black Annex, Fractured Soul and InFlux. To see the very best of PAX Australia’s indie showcase, view the showcase page here.

One of the best features of PAX Australia, in my opinion, was the huge freeplay and tabletop arena. This big hall held hundreds of consoles ready to run tournaments and also to let people relax and play a game with friends and strangers, creating an awesome atmosphere of community gaming. It also had both a large area for handheld gaming and a large tabletop area, populated mostly with Magic the Gathering games and how to lessons for beginners.

Presentations over the weekend were very exciting – from game developers to media presentations and how-to’s. Famous cosplayers, journalists and big name developers such as Gearbox and Bioware put on presentations and Q&A’s that were full up hours before they began – very popular panels.

Microsoft also took PAX Aus as it’s first opportunity to show off the Xbox One in Australia, drawing record numbers into the main theatre. They presented live demos of a few launch games and walked us through the new controller and kinect.

The last major part of PAX is arguably one of the most exciting – Cosplay. Seeing talented individuals out in awesome costumes was one of the best parts of PAX and there certainly were some incredible ones. Highlights included the huge number of League of Legends cosplays, Borderlands 2 Vault Hunters (and a clap-trap!) and even the Luteces from Bioshock Infinite!

Overall the expo was a great success and I’m very much looking forward to the coming years – bigger booths, bigger venue and bigger games, but for the first time this Expo has been in Australia it was very impressive.

Ah, E3, the Christmas of the gaming industry. I had a ball attending press conferences, playing demos, and partying the night away with new and old friends. I expected a lot from this year’s E3, because of the Xbox One and PS4 reveal.

So, what did I think?

The Games

My first stop was Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, an upcoming third-person combat game from Tecmo Koei. Keiji Inafune, creator of Mega Man, is involved with the project, and it showed. I loved the new art style and the smooth, just plain fun combat mechanic. I didn’t love that the enemies are zombies and the main character is part cyber ninja, but I guess that’s what’s in style right now. I quite enjoyed slinging zombies at other zombies – there’s just something so satisfying about that. The game is in development for PS3, Xbox 360, and iOS and is set for an early 2014 release.

Next up was Transistor. Check out my preview, but the short version is: I loved it.

Saints Row IV is just wacky: I used a dubstep gun, black hole gun, and a lightsaber. That is, until I discovered a few more of my super powers. Then I just stomped on everyone’s face and threw people into cars. The graphics are fine, the gameplay took a little getting used to, but I assume that’s because they started the demo off with more of your abilities and no kind of tutorial. I mentioned before that I love the idea behind this new entry, and I can’t wait to play some more, but it is definitely a meta kind of game.

I also had the opportunity to experience Diablo III on the PS3. All players are on the screen at the same time, so it got a little confusing at times, and checking armor and weapons took over the screen for everyone, meaning this has the potential to be pretty annoying. On the other hand, this game is super fun to play with friends, and I can just imagine everyone on the couch with a beer having a great time murdering monsters together. The graphics looked great, and the gameplay was mostly streamlined. All-in-all, I think it’s a pretty great port. We snagged a Legendary and all got free PS3 skins too! You’ll just need to make sure you never play it with me, because I obsessively check armor and stats…

Next on the list was Tekken Revolution, which came out the day before I got my hands on it at E3, but whatever. The new Tekken game is free-to-play and a PS3 exclusive. There are a total of twelve characters in the game, but only eight are playable from the start: Asuka, Jack 6, Kazuya, King, Lars, Lili, Marshall, and Paul. Heihachi Mishima, Jinpachi Mishima, and Ogre are fought as bosses in the Arcade mode, but aren’t playable. The character models have been streamlined, and everyone looks slightly more sparkly and smooth, but there aren’t any drastic character redesigns. There are also minor tweaks to the combat, leaving me very satisfied as I throw an unblockable move in front of a smooth combo. I anticipate spending a lot of time with this one!

And finally, I played the latest demo for The Last of Us. While I do appreciate the strong and diverse case of female characters, I also recommend checking out this article for another perspective.

The Consoles

Mobile and social games had a very strong showing, and I actually won a MOGA controller at lunch, which was pretty exciting. I don’t play games on my phone though, so we’ll see whether this gets me into them, or if I decide to hold a giveaway. Leave your opinion in the comments!

As for the Xbox One and the PS4, I had mixed feelings about both. I disliked the lack of female characters shown at the Xbox press conference and the amount of footage shown that was simply trailers in all of the conferences.

While it may be too soon to argue which console is better, the Xbox One did not have a very impressive lineup of exclusive games to back up their lack of customer service with the whole DRM issue. On the other hand, most of the games being featured in the Sony booth were actually PS3 games. On my fifth hand, apparently the Xbox One games were actually being demoed on PCs, but I’ve since heard that’s normal practice.

The new console controllers both felt fine in my hands. The PS4 controller now has triggers and the L1 and R1 functions are now mapped to them, which made a few games hard to play at first until I got used to them. The thumbsticks are now concave in the middle, but since I’ve never had a problem with them being convex, that didn’t really matter to me. The Start button is gone, replaced by the Options button, which I guess makes sense nowadays when you think about it. I didn’t play any games that used the Touchpad, so I can’t share any details about how it works.

The Xbox One still uses batteries. Can we talk about that? Like, seriously…who still uses batteries? It felt lighter than the old controller, but mostly feels completely familiar. The rumble is new, with it actually only affecting specific parts of the controller. I don’t know how I feel about that yet. Instead of Start and Select, it has Menu and View.

The Show

Overall, I had a great time, and there was tons to see and do at E3. I particularly loved the focus on indie games, with both IndieCade and the section in Sony’s booth devoted to indie games. There were tons of announcements, talks, presentations, and surprise guests at each of the big booths. I also took a picture in a carriage monster truck, so I feel that E3 2013 was a success.

No GravatarThis year’s Mizucon was held June 14-16 to lovely weather and sunshine at the Miami Sheraton hotel. Mizucon has always been one of my favorite conventions due in no small part from the tremendous effort and love their volunteers and staff put into it. But last year the followers of the con learned Mizucon was now under new management after an amazing run. And you know how most people react to change.

The new management was under an extremely reliable group called the Japanese Anime Investment Group that run conventions like Ikkicon in Texas and Anime Crossroads in Indiana and have investors as well known as AAA Anime (the only United States distributor that sells Good Smile Company merchandise) and Yes Anime (another distributor that is the largest in the Francisco Bay area), and the con chair himself owns a store and online retailer called Anime Pavilion, also an investor. To me it seems this well funded group and the staff would be capable of pulling off another hit this year. Well let me analyze how everything went.

In terms of activities available and use of space they get a thumbs up. There were the necessities, a video game room, maid and butler cafe, vendors room, artist alley, and plenty of roaming space. But the promise of karaoke and an anime viewing room went unfulfilled. The panel rooms were spacious enough but my panel room on Saturday lacked sound and the staff had to fetch me a cable and the likes. Needless to say I believe every panel room should be prepared prior to any presentation but the staff were constantly running around doing things and I could forgive them. The panels were varied enough so there was something for everyone to do. This abundance of activities made it unlikely for anyone who decided to look at the schedule to be bored.

I ended my panel earlier than expected and ended up improvising, lots of people showed up so now I have a new panel to host…

I loved the vendor’s room and walked out with some amazing deals and the vendor’s alley had great artisans but my funds were limited and I really wanted some merch. The video game room had Super Smash Bros. Brawl but other than that nothing interesting.

The cosplayer attendance was huge, I believe there were more cosplayers than casually dressed people, and the costume contest had great entries. The most impressive costume I saw during the convention was definitely the Alphonse Elric armor that won Best in Show.

What made the con was the attendees who were hanging all over the place because there were huge problems all three days of the con. All of them were largely the fault of the hotel who caused major inconveniences for the organizers, panelists, and attendees. I’ll break the problems down by day because there were plenty.

  • Friday: Panel rooms were missing and the schedule was changed, panels were pushed back and moved around, and attendees didn’t know when certain panels were being held.
  • Saturday: Solid schedule set but late night panels were cancelled because the hallway containing all the panel rooms was closed off early. The rave was shut down early for unclear reasons and attendees that were planning to stay late were made to leave at the same time.
  • Sunday: The convention was made to end earlier than expected.

Needless to say, the con chair is now looking for a new venue for next year.

The new management of Mizucon definitely tried the best they could to create a good show and it was a pretty good show. Next year will definitely be better with a hotel capable of handling conventions, a larger staff and volunteer pool, and the knowledge gained from this year’s experience to make a show that lives up to the image Mizucon has held for so long. And I’ll definitely be looking forward to next year. All picture taken of the convention are below.

No GravatarI recently had the opportunity to attend PAX East for the first time. The event was packed and a riot of colors, games and people.

To give you an idea of how crowded it was (besides these crazy pictures), I really wanted to play The Last of Us demo, but the line was already hours long at 10:20 AM… ten minutes before the show floor actually opened up! Luckily, the line for the DuckTales was much shorter.

PAX East had multiple sections, including a massive table top gaming area, a console and PC gaming area, the expo floor and an Indie game section. The indie games section was my favorite, filled with innovative and experimental games by developers creating games that they themselves actually wanted to play. Some of my favorites were Guacamelee, Transistor and Secret Ponchos.

Secret Ponchos: Indie Gold!

Secret Ponchos stole my heart as a quirky little spaghetti western top-down shooter with awesome music, lush art and a simple premise: this town ain’t big enough for the both of us. The game really gave me the feel of the old Westerns, as I hid behind a wagon and reloaded my gun, praying that the other outlaw was far enough away for my melee to recharge. I spoke with Eduardo Echeverria, the interface developer, who told me that the game will allow you to customize your character as you gain a reputation, essentially allowing you to create your own outlaw. He also revealed that they are developing a female character. Check her out on the far right and check out my preview article for more information on Secret Ponchos.

Saints Row 4: The Darling of PAX East

Of the big name games, Saints Row 4 promises to be the most outrageous, with a gun that allows you to dubstep people to death and the admission that there would have been a dragon you could ride if they’d had enough time to fit it into the game.

Players control the President of the United Saints (which you can import from your old game save) and must battle evil aliens in a computer generated world using only their super powers and wits. And guns. And monster trucks. Etc., etc., etc.

Panels, Parties and More

Besides the show floor and gaming areas there were also more panels than you could shake a stick at! Check :23 seconds in to see my lovely face at the TGS Podcast panel, for example. There were also parties like the one Twitch hosted and fun hangouts like the BioWare Base.

Despite the lack of many big name game releases, I still had a great time at PAX East and can’t wait to return to PAX Prime!

No GravatarI know you all are eagerly awaiting our write ups on some of the cool things we saw at PAX East 2013! In the meantime, here’s a quick look at some of the most exciting news from PAX:

  • Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced their new free-to-play collectible card game HearthStone: Heroes of WarcraftThis new game is focused around 1v1 and also allows for matchmaking through battle.net. This online capability will allow players to duel with other players, and will also allow for medal ranking boosts. There will be 300 cards based on the character classes from their game World of Warcraft (WoW) available at launch. You can purchase cards in packs for about $1 each.  The beta will be available this summer for PC, MAC, and even iPad gamers. The actual game will be available at the end of 2013.

  • Capcom has announced that they are resurrecting Duck ales and will be remaking the original game from Nintendo into a game available for PSN, Wii/WiiU, and Xbox Live that will be called DuckTales: Remastered.

  • Ms. Splosion Man, a long-awaited iOS game created by Twisted Pixel, will be released by the end of this month. Joystiq says this version will have power-up capabilities, one of which will let you skip levels if they are too difficult for you. The game is $10, and will also be available on Steam and Windows Phone.

  • Assassin’s Creed Creative Director Jean Guesdon and the team at UbiSoft Montreal talked about what motivated them to take the game to the sea. Jean Guesdon stated that the idea behind making the protagonist in Assassin’s Creed IV a pirate was the fact that it was an incredibly interesting time in history with compelling characters. One of the characters you can look forward to seeing in the new game is none other than Blackbeard. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be hitting the shelves on October 29, 2013 and is currently available for pre-order for $59.99.

  • Marvel Heroes will be released on June 4th. Marvel Heroes is a free-to-play MMO set in the Marvel universe. Marvel Heroes combines the core gameplay style of action RPGs and MMOs with the expansive library of heroes from the Marvel Universe. In the game, players can collect and play as their favorite Marvel superheroes, and you can even go further and customize your character. It’s F2P and will have PvP at launch.

  • Mass Effect retrospective video was released today by Bioware. It includes memories from a ton of people who worked on the games.
  • Red 5 Studios discussed their MMO Firefall (currently in beta) and also announced the development of a brand-new channel devoted exclusively to gaming. The channel will be called Stage 5, and can be found both on YouTube and the Stage 5 website. The channel will soon be available in app form for iPad, Android, and Ouya.   • The nineteenth EVE Online expansion, Odyssey, was announced today. A website has been launched, and it will be out on June 4th. Odyssey will focus on exploration and will “shake up the status quo.”

  • Dust: An Elysian Tail is coming to Steam and might be available as soon as next month. The game was originally only available on the Xbox Live Arcade. Creators Dean Dodrill and Alex Kain also discussed Dust 2, with both saying that they have lots of ideas for the sequel.

  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be coming to Mac on April 25th and will include all of the previously-released extra content for the game. It will also be released for iOS devices this summer, and will be a complete port of the console and PC/Mac game (minus some maps, due to file size limitations on iOS). Work on the port began a year ago, and the team is really happy with the touch controls. Price is unknown beyond being “premium priced.”

  • Fuse will be released at the end of May – May 28th in North America, May 31st in Europe. Fuse is a four-player co-op shooter from Electronic Arts and Insomniac Games. You play one of four agents – Dalton Brooks, Izzy Sinclair, Jacob Kimble, and Naya Deveraux – each of whom has their own unique skills and weapons. You’ll be able to get it for PS3 and Xbox 360.
  • Blizzard announced that the PlayStation 3 version of Diablo III will feature an in-game menu that allows players, both online and offline, to trade items between each other, as long as they are in the same game. This new system will be making up for the lack of the auction house from the PC version. Diablo III will also have online and offline co-op for up to four players on its console version. There is no release date yet.
  • Blizzard’s Rob Pardo talks to Chris Grant from Polygon about the company’s new game, Hearthstone. Check out the video.

  • Call of Juarez: Gunslinger will bring a new spin to the series. Techland shows us a mix of myth and truth in this downloadable title. Some of the “based on real-life” characters you will see in the game are Pat Garrett, Wild Bill Hickok, and Billy the Kid. With arcade-like action, new environments, and an old west style, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger sounds very promising.

  • The Elder Scrolls Online boasts new character advancement. This new MMO is just what fans of Elder Scrolls and MMOs have been waiting for. The game will feature PvP, lots of action in the combat system, and skills that level with use. Build your characters the way you want with use of any weapon or armor, but also gain item-specific abilities with each one you choose. The game launches later this year.

 

  • Borderlands 2 has a new playable character: Krieg the Psycho. This melee-based character is based on the psycho enemies in the game. Your action skill for Krieg is Blood Axe Rampage, which allows the character to regain health while dealing damage with your Buzz Axe. Krieg will be out in May, and is a $10 standalone DLC. metal gear rising screenshot 1Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is like a kung-fu action movie that is hopped up on steroids that you just don’t want to end. Developed by Platinum Games (Bayonetta; Vanquish; Madworld) and published by published by Konami this is the mutant off spring of the formally cancelled Kojima Studios game Metal Gear Rising. The game was cancelled then later picked up by Platinum and completely reworked from the ground up with the consent of Hideo Kojima.

It’s an action, hack and slash game that is high paced and features an amazing new system mechanic. The mechanic is like bullet-time with a sword, but much cooler. Once doing enough damage to an enemy you are prompted with a slow down effect where you can in turn slice away at your opponent in slow motion. Doing so causes tons of dismemberment and it is truly a sight to behold. Mind you, this game is not for the faint of heart.

metal gear rising screenshotThe story takes place four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4. You play as Raiden, the awesome ninja cyborg dude who used to suck in Metal Gear Solid 2…yeah that guy. You work for a Maverick security working to save money for his family by protecting Prime Minister N’Mani of an unknown African location. Next thing you know you are ambushed and the prime minister is captured then killed. During your rescue you become injured and defeated by one of the captors working for another group affiliated with Desperado Empires, a group associated with terrorism.

Not long after you soon end up trying to seek revenge a couple weeks later after your defeat. The story then unravels to several different plot points that seem very Metal Gear-esque. Without me spoiling the very convoluted plot, let me say it is all over the place with tons of codec dialogue and moments that will make you go “huh?”

metal gear rising screenshot 2Unfortunately the story mode is very short. I personally beat the game in a little under five hours. Granted those five hours were very awesome and filled with great action that is simply indescribable. Luckily, for those not willing to play the game multiple times, which I highly recommend, there are extra VR Missions that can be unlocked through the story. These test your sneaking ability and your combat skills. Not to mention the tons of skills and other statistical things you’d want to gain and extras to collect.

The sound design is another very strong component of this title. Composed by Jamie Christopherson it features amazing rock/techno/orchestral music. It’s so good I enjoy listening to it even after I am done with the game. Not to mention the awesome sounds of explosions, decapitation and sword slashes. It’s overall just awesome.

The graphics are also a marvel. Environments feature fully cut-able things from which you can wreak your destruction upon. The action looks so good as the game runs at a very smooth 60 fps. Sadly, some of the stages are just too open and barren. Understandable though considering how much work it must take to do such feats.

Most importantly is how the game plays. Safe to say it is very intuitive and yet simplistic. The game’s simple light and heavy attack system complement each other well. Combos are easy and fluent when stringing attacks together and can make you feel very badass. The only problem is the camera, which for the majority of the time works until there are either way too many enemies or you’re in a weird spot.

Overall Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is an amazing experience that Metal Gear fans and action fans shouldn’t miss. Sure the campaign could stand to longer but, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were to see a sequel in the future.

Street Fighter X Tekken is back and much better with it’s recent 2013 update. Improving the core mechanics of its fighting system and making every match more fun, Street Fighter X Tekken finally deserves the recognition it should deserve.

Upon starting up your copy of SFxT, you are prompted with an update to the game which will in turn change a huge portion of the game. For starters, the damage is more apparent as combos just seem to hurt more and it also helps that when tagging out your point character, any damage received takes longer to regenerate. It helps to alleviate the frequency of time outs that the prior version had far too many of.

There are also small changes done such as more time added to Pandora Mode, having the Fight! logo remove quicker and not having the camera pan in at the end of a Cross Rush combo. It helps to quicken up the pace while also making matches seem in better control of the player(s).

Even subtle tweaks such as gems not being so bright on top of characters helps. There are also tons of character specific changes that alter the majority of the rosters take on their matchups. I almost forgot to mention in my opinion the biggest change to the system, normally when you are attacked you have two different parts of health (yellow life & red life). The red life is recoverable when the character is not on point but now as soon as a throw is performed on any character with red life all of their recoverable health is gone along with the damage of the throw. It invokes a certain mind game mechanic in competition especially since you cannot roll safely off a knockdown.

With all these changes made to the game it helps freshen up a lifeless corpse that everyone in the fighting game community had long forgotten. But I sense a strong sense of change happening to make this dead game rise from its grave. I strongly recommend any naysayer of the game to try it again. Who knows, it might change your opinion. Plus its free…what harm can it do?

Ahh Ohayocon…a yearly convention held in Columbus, OH that lasts for three days that is the culmination of several people who enjoy anime, gaming and anything nerdy. I am an Ohayocon faithful who will attend the event every year. Memories are made for myself and others in an overall fun weekend.

I do enjoying anime but I enjoying gaming a hell of a lot more. Getting to spend time with several people in the gaming department is always a treat. I do enjoy playing in fun little tournaments along with just playing games for fun. There’s nothing like playing Dance Central with a complete stranger and being able to laugh afterwards.

Then there is the Mystery Tournament. It is practically an Ohayocon ritual that is held by the Gaming Department’s head operator “Gex”. It’s a blast to play old good/bad games once a year in a competition format…it’s indescribable. The hype environment
and electrifying atmosphere can leave one winded.

Other than the gaming department there is the awesome dance/rave that occurs every Friday and Saturday evening. It consumes people and makes everyone feel so energized. Its awesome to say the least.

And of course there are the panels which can be hit and miss. Fortunately they are more often on than off. They range from simple “how to” panels to strictly 18+ filth.
There seems to be a little something for everyone.

I have been a frequent Ohayocon attendee for the past 3-4 years and each time I’ve gone its been rather enjoyable. I would like to thank everyone who makes this event as awesome as it is and to all the awesome people I’ve encountered.

If you haven’t experienced Ohayocon and you live in the midwest, I would highly recommend going to it in 2014.
