Lately, I’ve been really getting into geek fashion and, man, has my wallet been crying tears of sadness, while I cry tears of joy! I have been obsessing over Black Milk Clothing, but through other people, I’ve discovered another great company that focuses on geek fashion – Mitmunk!

mitmunk-bionicredMitmunk describes themselves with the following:

MITMUNK is a Vancouver-based design studio run by Wayne Elliott and Heather Joan Tam, specializing in printed apparel and accessories.

Wayne is an artist with a background in video games. As founder of and designer for MITMUNK, he brings his love for striking, experimental street fashion into his artwork for Mitmunk’s printed clothing.

Heather is an interdisciplinary artist and Curator Emeritus of a community museum.

We love vintage illustrations, etchings, lithographs, serigraphs; the way ink sits on paper; blacks and grays and whites. You’ll find these elements in our designs, which are inspired by and use images from historic, public domain printed matter.

Mitmunk is a bit pricey, but a little more affordable than Black Milk Clothing ($72.35 vs. $80-90 – just leggings comparison).  The benefit to Mitmunk over other geek fashion that I’ve seen so far is they offer bigger sizes. Other lines like Black Milk stop at XL, but Mitmunk goes all the way up to 3XL.

I think that their clothing looks great and I can’t wait for my first piece to come in!

No GravatarHave you ever wanted to be a geek fashion designer? Her Universe, a company that specializes in sci-fi themed clothing for fangirls, recently announced an open fashion design competition to be held during San Diego Comic Con.

Inspired by recent fashion week trends, such as Rodarte’s collection based on Star Wars, Her Universe decided to team up with Nerdist to create a fashion show centered around “geek couture.” This isn’t just another cosplay competition. Her Universe founder, Ashley Eckstein is looking for designs that can be seen on the runway. Think Project Runway meets Big Bang Theory.

In order to enter, contestants must submit a design by April 4th. The top 30 designs will be chosen to be featured in the fashion show during Comic Con. The finalists must actually construct their design and send their own model on the runway. Two winners will be chosen. One will be picked by the judges and the other will be the audience favorite.

So what do you win? The winning designers will score the chance to co-design a fashion collection, alongside Ashley Eckstein for Her Universe, that will be sold at Hot Topic. This is an amazing opportunity for designers who want to join the geek fashion movement. For more information on how to enter, see the official contest rules.

No GravatarJust in time for the premiere of Season 4 of Game of Thrones, Black Milk Clothing has released a huge line of clothing inspired by the popular HBO series. The new collection features dresses, leggings, bathing suits, skirts and tops.

Black Milk Clothing is well known for making leggings and body-con dresses with geeky themes such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. The new Game of Thrones collection has a lot more variety and more styles to flatter different body types.

No GravatarI recently learned about a new crowd funding project that I believe has been long overdue. A luggage made with cosplayers in mind. This project is led by Frentep, a Japanese company who make products to empower geeks. This latest endeavor is to mass produce luggage that make it easier for cosplayers in Japan to travel around with their costumes, as the social norms in Japan make it quite embarrassing to travel without your cosplay gear out. The luggage might be made with Japanese consumers in mind, but its features can be appreciated by any cosplayer, here are the product features.

coscase1

  • Detachable straps on the side of luggage allow for easy transportation of long objects that wouldn’t fit in the suitcase, like an umbrella or a sword. There are bags on the bottom of each side so objects don’t fall or scrape.

coscase2

  • Comes with a flat surface to turn the bag into an instant makeup stand.

coscase4

  • Thin enough to fit in crowded areas but if you need more space you can open zipper to get more space.
  • Easily accessible small pocket in front for business cards.
  • Waterproof, perfect for a wet umbrella.
  • Wheel stoppers.
  • Cover that acts as a partition between items you want to keep out of sight and pockets for essential items.

The effort is being funded using MotionGallery, a Japanese crowdfunding site. Don’t let the language and distance barrier get you down, donations from all over the world are accepted! Only downside is oversea consumers who pledge enough money to have a reward mailed to them have to pay shipping and handling fees in addition to the donation, but if you want it badly enough it’s a small price to pay for the world’s first suitcase catered to the cosplay community. You can get the suitcase if you pledge roughly 15,000 ¥.
