Duke Nukem Forever was announced in 1997 and released in 2011 but was in development on and off throughout that time. Now, a build of Duke Nukem Forever allegedly from 2001, has leaked online. The footage and screenshots of the game showed up on 4Chan and seem to be the version of the game that was shown off at E3 2001, albeit an allegedly far more complete version. The leakers have claimed that the 2001 build will be released in June and that almost every chapter in the game is present in some form.
This build contains music from the band Megadeath and is allegedly running on Unreal Engine 1. Duke Nukem Forever has an interesting history, since back at E3 2001, 3D Realms showed off the game for the first time in three years and actually received a very positive reception. The issues, however, were that internal struggles caused the game to falter in development, which resulted in only 18 people working on the game by 2003.
Later in 2006, developer George Broussard told a journalist that the team had “fucked up” and that development on the game had restarted. In August 2006 half the team would leave due to the lack of progression and frustration. While this version of the game leaked seems to be far from complete, it will be interesting for sure to see what happens if this is indeed released in June.
