Alright guys, I’m going to tell you about a movie that blew me away. And when I say that, you should know how serious that is. I like a lot of movies. I mean, a lot. But I only just like them. I watch them, I move on, and tend not to even think about them again. Seeing a movie that has me thinking about it months later, years, that’s a good movie. This movie I’m about to tell you about makes my stomach churn just thinking about it. It was that good.
With that said, you should immediately go watch “Safety Not Guaranteed”. This movie is mainly based around a young woman named Darius who is working as a journalist. She, another lowly intern, and a lead writer go on an assignment to find a man who has posted in the classifieds this:
WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED.
Darius, played by Aubrey Plaza, and her two co-workers, Arnau played by Karan Soni and Jeff played by Jake Johnson, head off to find Kenneth. Kenneth, played by Mark Duplass, is living in a rundown house outside of a small town. Jeff attempts to approach him as a journalist but Kenneth pushes him away. Darius decides that she would be better suited to convince Kenneth that she wants to actually help. She succeeds.
At this point the movie becomes a wild ride. Part emotional, part comedy, part “what the hell is going on”, you never stop being entertained. By the end you have no clue what is going to happen. Can Kenneth really travel in time? Does that matter anymore? How will these people go back to their lives now? You start out unsure as to whether you’ll even like these people, only to fall in love with each and every one of them.
I’m not sure I can explain why I love this movie so much. Maybe it’s the character development. Watching these people go from being a quirky stranger to someone who has learned from their past and is striving to be better. Maybe it’s the acting. These people feel real, from start to finish, with strengths and weaknesses. Maybe it’s the writing. This amazing story of discovery, understanding, and humanity is beyond overwhelming.
If you make it to the end and you are not just bowled over then I don’t know what might be wrong with you. I guess, watch something else.
Basically “Safety Not Guaranteed” must watch for any geek. Go ahead, go watch it. You can come back and tell me how right (or wrong) I am.
