Retro style games are a staple of the indie gaming scene. Whether they are remakes or retraux games, the urge to recapture the classic feel is there but not always does the game succeed. 8Bit Hero seeks to capture the feel of classic arcade adventure games as well as games such as the original Legend of Zelda games, and it does it very well.
8Bit Hero feels like a beautiful marriage of old and new, where the classic gaming mentality from the arcades and NES is merged to modern gaming tropes and ideas. While playing the game, I was amazed with the pixel art. It was blended so well with 3D visuals in a way that I have never seen before. In fact I dare say that this is the most unique art I have ever seen in an indie game and that’s in a good way. The different art styles blend so well that I think this is something that needs to be duplicated by others.
In terms of gameplay, the game does play like the classic Arcade games as well as taking influence from NES games like The Legend of Zelda, but also modern games such as Diablo. The game plays amazing either in single player or multiplayer, albeit with multiplayer getting a bit too chaotic at times for its own good. That isn’t to say that the multiplayer is bad, it is just that it can be a little bit cumbersome and annoying when there are too many players. Perhaps if the multiplayer is left to 3 players, then it will be okay as a playable experience.
Overall, the game is fun, even if the multiplayer can get annoying if there are too many players. I had a lot of fun with this game and think you all will as well. I give this a high recommendation. Its worth checking out.
