The Fall was a game that truly stood out to me when it was first released. It combined the adventure gaming genre with the metroidvania genre and blended the two excellently. I was curious how its sequel would follow up, and I must say that it did not disappoint. The Fall part 2: Unbound continues the story, but also expands on the gameplay is some very interesting ways.
A.R.I.D, the AI g continues her journey but now things are different. The controls are touched up brilliantly and it now feels more naturally unnatural, for lack of a better term. A.R.I.D controlling in a way that now feels like you are controlling one character through another character. A.R.I.D has gone through changes based on the events of the last game, and now things get more technical, as A.R.I.D must fend off attacks while disembodied. To do this, A.R.I.D must rely on three other playable characters to advance in the story.
The first game combined the monkey island series’ puzzle solving with Metroid’s exploration, but the Fall part 2: Unbound instead forges its own path. I have to say that while the different characters you could play as, did end up giving the game some familiarity, I rather liked the fact that something different has been done here. That is not even getting into the story itself, and I must say that the story is one of the better parts of The Fall Part 2: Unbound. A.R.I.D‘s story is a compelling one and you want to see it through to the end, even through the challenges. The developers at Over The Moon previously released a set of videos discussing their inspirations and influences, and it shows in the game. They took from what they learned and applied it in new and creative ways. The end result is a game that has much to offer both in terms of gameplay and story.
