I struggle to find a good way to describe Penny Punching Princess, as it defies most conventional descriptions. The best way I can think of to describe this is an an action RPG centered around capitalism as a means of getting stronger. something that is not touched on in many games. I wasnt sure what to expect from the game at first, but I found myself truly immersed in it as I played more and more.
This is definitely an off beat game, and that helps this stand out more. Penny Punching Princess takes the typical norm of an Action RPG and uses the idea of capitalism to throw a wrench into the mechanics, You advance based on getting money from defeating enemies and opening chests, and this enables new abilities to be gained. One major option that is unlocked is the ability o bribe your enemies into joining you. It really changes the way you play and offers up so many new ideas and possibilities and Penny Punching Princess utilizes them to their fullest potential.
I do feel that there are some issues however, that hold the game back from being the best it could be. First off, some of the areas just feel too much the same as the other areas. It is not a major issue but is noticeable, and did break immersion once or twice. The other issue I had was that the combat, while simple and easy to learn, did feel floaty every now and then. Fortunately these are not deal breaking issues for the game, but are noticeable to me.
On the positives, the game has an excellent sense of humor and the writing is genuinely witty and well done. Penny Punching Princess identified an area not done before in gaming and shows us that there is a lot more to the games we love that can be done, than we had thought. Overall, I loved it and do fully recommend it. It is a great twist on a classic genre and well worth giving a play session, and you will not regret your time with it!
