It seems there is no limit to the imagination of game designers, and that includes what the imagination allows to be done with older ideas. Eternal Edge takes ideas introduced in The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and combines them with concepts from the game 3D Dot Game Heroes, which results in an experience that has the best of both games in addition to some hiccups.

Eternal edge is an action RPG with brawler elements that uses a basic story to accentuate the retro feel. I don’t know how to put it besides that the game serves as a throwback to classic games while taking ideas from the modern age. You need to find treasures to advance and make your character better, and the game makes finding this treasures (called Matrixes) a blast to find. The game has definite throwback to Zelda 1 on the NES in terms of the side dungeons available, but the main game actually offers a deep sense of exploration and immersion. The combat in the game is simple, but the game makes it work to its advantage somehow and it actually becomes surprisingly more in depth as you go on.

The issues I had with the game were graphical glitches that occurred at times. These are not super common but do happen and can cause a blurry screen at times. There is also a lighting issue, but that is more with some FX overwhelming the visuals at times,. The other issue I have is the loading times, which can be extremely annoying due to their length. The developers have said that a patch is coming, so this issue should be resolved soon,  Fortunately these issues didn’t ruin the experience for me, and I enjoyed what the game has to offer.

I feel many may enjoy this as well, due to the sense of “familiar but new” that Eternal Edge has, it is not an easy thing to accomplish, so I applaud the developers for hitting the sweet spot. This is not one to pass up.
