Frank Cifaldi, from Digital Eclipse recently posted an updated on twitter to talk about the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection and what is being changed. More specifically, the rotary games have all been redesigned gameplay-wise to work as Twin Stick games.
Cifaldi noted that the games originally used a rotary control which could not be replicated on a controller due to its unique design. This resulted in ports having to map buttons to rotate either clockwise or counter clockwise, which was a clunky mechanic and hampered the gameplay.
By making the games play as Twin Stick, the controls is far more accurate to the original intent even if it has been changed and is slightly easier. The goal was to make the games enjoyable for a new audience and this was how they felt they could best introduce the gameplay in a way that would allow them to get into the games.
You can see Cifaldi’s comments below.
We've been hard at work on #snk40th, a compilation of SNK's criminally underlooked output from the days before the Neo Geo.
I wanted to show off something I'm incredibly proud of: we managed to force all the rotary games to work as twin stick. Let me explain how cool this is: pic.twitter.com/GnzwhVgYRH
