Power Rangers is a beloved franchise that has been around for 25 years and has touched many aspects of media and pop-culture including video games. Many Power Rangers games have been beat em ups of various kinds, but the best games in the franchise were the fighting games.
One of the best 16 bit games based on the franchise was Power Rangers the Fighting Edition for SNES. This was a game that used the Megazords and villains in one on one fights. There have been other attempts at fighting games for the franchise but none have been very good to be honest. A return to a true fighting game for consoles would be truly amazing and given that the franchise is going through a resurgence right now, I feel that this is the time. I am not speaking of the recent mobile game, but rather something down for consoles and pc from the ground up.
A Power Rangers fighting game could be done in one of two ways. The game could be a tournament fighter style game where individual rangers and villains fight each other, or via tag teams and use their special weapons and abilities. There is over 25 years of history to pick from, not counting the parent series Super Sentai, which has been around even longer. A Power Rangers fighter could also make use of the American show’s exclusive characters such as Lord Zedd and the fan favourite Titanium Ranger.
The other option, would be to make a fighting game using only the Megazords. If this option were used though, drawing on ( even if not necessarily using) every Megazord or Zord with a battle mode. This would include the original Dino Megazord, but also the Dragonzord Battle Mode also from Season 1, all the way to the Zords from Ninja Steel. Villains could of course be used in their giant forms, and this could create a truly fun game.
I truly believe there is potential in both ideas, and that Power Rangers could produce very competitive fighting games. There are a number of developers who could make it, such as Arc System Works just for example, but really a new console/PC Power Rangers fighting game just needs to happen.
