If you are looking for a unique sci-fi fantasy hybrid, I would certainly recommend A New World by Greg Haynes. It reminds me of a cyberpunk/urban fantasy hybrid with vampires, werewolves, and just about any other fantasy creature you can think of, including a yeti! This book is extremely unique in its world-building, a setting that is a character in and of itself.
Lucius Caine is an ex-IPD cop who now is a Freelancer—a sort of mercenary for hire. When he gets call in for a special assignment, he gets set on fun and exciting adventure with a colorful cast of characters. It’s a story that gives you everything you want: lots of action, suspense, mystery, and an amazing setting.
The world that Haynes paints is an alternate reality where fantasy meets reality, a world not unlike our own but with every kind of mythical creature you can imagine. There are even “factions” that rule, including vampires versus the Vatican. Sounds like fun, right?
I also enjoyed the use of magic combined with technology. It was like a fantasy version of cyberpunk, almost. The idea was certainly unique and added wonderfully to the setting and the storyline.
The book is wonderfully written with great description and lore. If I had to give one complaint, it would be that sometimes there is so much world-building that the actual story doesn’t push along as quickly as I personally would like. That, however, does not mean that you will not enjoy the pacing.
I’d highly recommend picking up this book, especially if you enjoy a lot of action with your sci-fi/fantasy. Just make sure you carve out some time for it because once you start reading, you won’t want to put it down.
