Donut County is a game all about a Raccoon on a mission. This mission might seem like something good but turns out to be something that will lead a whole town to fall underground. Laying a whole town to ruin might not be great for the town but it’s all good if this Raccoon gets a quadcopter, right?

Donut County begins with a brief tutorial of sorts. After meeting the main characters the player becomes a hole. This hole is controlled by a raccoon named BK. This Raccoon has taken over the local Donut County donut shop, by the order of the Trash King. The beast has this idea from his overseer that delivering a donut means opening holes and sucking up everything.

It’s rather interesting controlling a hole and running around eating everything. The player soon finds themselves flung forward to the near future where the whole town is underground. BK has caused all of this trouble, and now its time for the player to play through it.

Donut County is at its heart a puzzle game. Players will need to eat up everything but have to do it in the right way. Not everything will be eaten up at the start but soon enough the hole will open wider and nothing will be left standing. It’s actually rather beautiful watching someone’s life vanish with such a simple thing as a hole.

Players will systematically eat up small objects and the hole will grow. Soon enough the player will eat up things like kilns and houses. These holes are terrors to the people they visit but the animals don’t seem to see them. It’s interesting that these holes are silent, and more often than not the animals that are being affected have no idea. But by the end, these animals are free falling down a monster of a hole. This is another cool part of the game because each animal must be shocked by this event.

BK continues to use these holes until most of the town is underground. That’s when the story continues and his best friend the only human around stops his shenanigans. It’s great to see someone stand up to BK and it is a turning point in his character. BK eventually realizes that maybe what he is doing isn’t actually helping anyone and this turnabout is part of what makes this game so good.

This game is split up into about 18 levels each with their own style. These animals live in different places and have their own wants. Its great seeing how these animals live and watching their own lives crumble beneath them. There really is something so peaceful about slowly but surely eating up an animal’s life.

The animal’s lives are also chronicled in the extensive Trashopedia. This data is collected whenever BK eats something up with a hole. The items are even given their own flavor text. It’s interesting to read the text and find out what the writer of the text thinks of these items. This is just an added bonus to the game and I think it adds just a little something extra to this fantastic game.

The music in the game is also pretty nice and plays nicely over the different environments. I’ve begun to really listen to game music and found that often times when the music meshes with the gameplay that my enjoyment increases. For a peaceful style game, the music works well and adds to the energy of the game.

Now, will BK actually give up his hole scheme or will he get his quadcopter? Who’s actually pulling the strings here? Donut County is a great puzzle game and one that doesn’t take long to beat. If the player has an interest in demolishing people’s lives with a hole it would be in their best interest to pick up this hilarious indie game. BK is causing trouble, will the player do his dirty work?
