There is a renaissance of 2D metroidvanias now, in which developers are trying to do something different to stand out more. One such game is Warlocks 2 Godslayers, a game that can be described as a 2D platformer, metroidvania and co-op beat em up gameplay hybrid.

You will play as one of five characters and set on a quest to become a strong warlock and defeat the gods. Along the way, you will encounter many obstacles and find new ways around them. This may sound generic at first, but the game has extremely witty writing that is full of self-awareness, likeable characters and enough gameplay twists to keep you hooked.

The gameplay is a mix of Metroidvania and 2D brawler action as I stated, but it will feel different depending on what character you choose. Far from being a simple cosmetic change, each character feels unique and plays differently from the others. This makes the game great for both replay value and for co-op gameplay. The action can get very intense as you go along, so having friends to help out can really add to the experience.

There is a good diversity of both level design and enemy type here, and that keeps things from getting boring. Some enemies will attack more aggressively for instance, while others use a more strategic approach. You need to plan your attacks right, and when in co-op, coordination is key. The world itself seems suited for co-op style gameplay, with its layout designed for more players as well. That said, the single-player mode can be equally rewarding if you want more hours of new experiences.

The visuals are sharp and done in a style similar to games like Dead Cells. The difference here is that they seem brighter in a way, which fits the aesthetic more. Audio-wise, there are no complaints as the music fits perfectly with the rest of the presentation. I already mentioned the witty writing, but it bears repeating that this is a well-written game with clever dialogue that is humorous at the right times and is serious when needed.

Overall, I liked Warlocks 2 Godslayers and give it a recommendation. This is not one to pass up.
