One Night Stand is a visual novel that tells the story of the morning after a One Night Stand. In a circumstance like this, it can be rather awkward, especially if the people don’t know each other. More often than not, the two people involved will not know each other. This game tells one such story and does so quite nicely. Players will wake up in bed, and meet the woman they slept with. They might not know who she is, but they can look around her room to discover things about her. The game takes place mostly in her bedroom where her personality shines. There is a good deal to see in her room and players can look at as much of it as they want. Every little bit tells something about her so why not examine it all.
Thought bubbles pop up and players are allowed to choose the best answer for the situation. Choose the wrong one and she might send them packing. Lie to her and risk losing her forever. Just because the two characters don’t know each other doesn’t mean they weren’t meant to be together. Just try not to be too nosy, it might turn her off and send the character away. The game itself allows players to take their time, looking around the room. It doesn’t force the player to simply talk to the girl. It is all about getting through the situation in the way the player thinks best. This is always just a little awkward, the player should put themselves in her shoes. Sure, this already happened, but some decency is to be expected.
They will also have access to a phone and be able to contact a friend. This friend wonders what went on the night before and texts the player to check on them. Will the character use this phone in a devious way? Will they ignore their friend until they leave, the choice is the players. Choice is rather important as this game has multiple endings. This game also has twelve different endings for the player to unlock. That is quite a lot of endings and its nice to see so much effort was put into a small game like this. Some of the endings of course end with the player being forced to go, but others end with them two people finding some sort of love between them.
The game is hand-drawn and looks phenomenal. I wasn’t expecting it to look as good as it did. The world looks just real enough that it feels lived in. The bedroom is homey and the characters show emotion. I’m always excited to see hand-drawn games as they sometimes have so much more emotion. A lot of work was put into making this game look as nice as it does while keeping a style the artist wanted. Plus the game has its original soundtrack. As the game progresses the player will hear some solid tunes. It’s one reason I like this game, the soundtrack is pretty solid. Plus there’s some solid guitar that plays through it and I always enjoy some good guitar.
While not a triple-A game, One Night Stand does tell a story if the player is willing to hear it. These two people may have spent a night together but that isn’t what is important. The morning after could change their lives, if the player is willing to take things in. What will happen to this pair, will they find love or never see each other again, will the player be their cupid?
