I love RPGs and the variety the genre has, so I am very excited when a new RPG seems to catch my eye. Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travelers seemed to have that special something when it was first shown off by NIS America, and I followed the game closely as time went on ( no pun intended). When I finally got to play the game for myself however, I find the experience to be somewhat lacking when compared to what I had thought I would be getting.
Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travelers is a beginner RPG, and I knew that going in. You have a main character in Sherry who must find out why things have suddenly become strange in her town and is aided by her friends and the robot named Isaac. Sherry will travel back and forth in time to solve the mystery and the game shows promise at times, but its when we get into the game itself that the mark has been missed by a great deal. The battles are overly simplistic, with the exception of Isaac, whose moves are done via transformations. Isaac’s transformations can be enhanced and expanded on when you find more gears over time. This can be compared to the job system from Final Fantasy, but slightly lower in potency.
The battles do not feel like anything special and as the game goes on, I felt things dragging significantly. This is a very linear game, despite what you may have thought, and the overall sense of discovery is not very high. There are some good environments and some nice effects, but overall I just wanted more. The fights didn’t do much for me, even with Isaac changing things up, and I began to think of other games I could be playing instead, which is not something I should be doing.
The story of the game feels cliched and even the time travel elements do not feel like anything special. I had wanted to like Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travelers, but it just feels so generic. There is no voice acting, and that could have really helped the game out a lot. The art style used here definitely does help, as it has a western cartoon style of art and there is a nice cyberpunk theme to this as well. Those are the high points for me with Destiny Connect: Tick-Tock Travelers, but the overall game just feels like it could have been more.
If you are looking for a beginner RPG, this is not the worst option to have. But if you want something more, then you should look elsewhere.
