Rocket Wars for the Nintendo Switch is an interesting game in that it is both simplistic and innovative on the same time. It takes the Asteroids formula and mixes it with ideas from other shooters such as Geometry Wars, and creates a very chaotic multiplayer experience. The game has a fairly standard control scheme, only using 1 stick and four buttons to move around and attack. You have a thruster and three specific weapon buttons, namely a regular weapon, a special weapon, and the pulse.
When it comes to using these weapons, things get a bit more complex. Special weapons require powerups to use but come in a variety of forms. For instance, there are attacks that include lasers, rockets and burst attacks, and more out there extreme weapons that have a wide spread. As for the pulse, it is a strategic weapon and needs to be used very carefully. It can block incoming attacks and can be used as an attack itself, in the form of a ramming attack used to collide with enemy ships.
The game has several modes to check out such as Deathmatch where the first player to ten kills wins whereas. survivor is a last man standing mode. There is a simple Free Play mode where you don’t have any goals and Nuke King where the to make a kill becomes the Nuke King, and then its a race to become and survive as the King Lastly there is Space Ball, where the goal is to destroy the other player’s goal areas with the ball and have your own goal post still standing at the end.
There are a ton of unlockables to find here, and new ships to unlock, as well as new skins. Overall, the game is very fun in multiplayer but lacking for single player exploits. There are single player modes, but they are not the best to experience the game in. This is a great game if you are playing with friends and full of content in that respect, but as a single player game, I would pass.
