Stories Untold is a horror game in the style of old school computer games. The text-based games that were popular in the ’80s. Players must accurately choose the correct answers to play. The first chapter is relatively simple, but it soon gets rather hard. The game is a solid fusion of point and click, horror, and text-based gaming. Players will need to be direct with their actions. Choosing the wrong action will result in nothing happening. The game expects the player to know exactly what needs to be done. It’s an interesting concept and a look back on what once was.

The four stories bound between different genres too. They are all different from the rest and enjoyable in their way. Though the later chapters are a little more scientific. I wasn’t the biggest fan of this approach. It made the game a little less fun for me because it was just following a list of commands. The first chapter felt like I was there but the rest is a little more robotic. The first chapter is a remastered version of the story, The House Abandoned. This story is what made me want to continue playing through the game. It’s dark, it’s gripping, and doesn’t require too much of the player. I was happily immersed in this chapter and was quite frightened by what did occur in it. It’s a shame that later chapters become so tedious, as this one was awesome.

The rest of the chapters lead the player through experiments or things that take a little more effort. I wasn’t a big fan of repeating steps when I was younger, and now it’s almost a chore. Thinking so hard about the problems in the story pulled me away from the fear. In the first chapter, I honestly forgot I was playing a horror game. Thus, I was genuinely afraid of what was going to happen. The latter chapters pull me out in a different way, and it ruins the immersion.

The music though is rather cool. All things considered, the music is something that kept me playing. It’s this cool ’80s synthpunk music that pours through the game. The game continues to feel like an old school game because of the music. It’s great listening to it as the player delves into the world, and is surprisingly good for horror music. I will give the team props for making the game look so good. The world is based on the eighties and it looks great. The technology is designed so faithfully and there is an air of this world that is not our own. I enjoyed seeing this past world realized in this game and it made me want to play more.

Stories Untold is a game that is worth playing. The stories are well crafted and the game is fun. There is something about this game that is just so interesting. The game does provide frights that are welcome. John McKellen of Alien Isolation has helped create quite the horror game. It might not be for everyone but it is sure to please anyone who likes text-based horror. There are four stories to be told, will the player take part in them.
