64th Street: A Detective Story
Originally released by Jaleco in 1991, 64th Street: A Detective Story is a Final Fight-style beat ’em up where the game’s protagonists Rick and Allen solve the mystery of a kidnapped female with their fists and plays similarly to Jaleco’s later brawler series Rushing Beat.
Arabian
Arabian is a 1983 platform game from Sun Electronics, also known as Sunsoft. You play as an Arabian prince who must rescue the kidnapped princess, and can earn bonus points by collecting the many jars containing the letters A, R, A, B, I, A, and N.
Ben Bero Beh
Ben Bero Beh is a single-screen platform game released by Taito in 1984 where you play as the superhero Ben. Ben must extinguish the fire that has ravaged his apartment complex to rescue his girlfriend. Be careful as the gas explosions, crumbling floors, and numerous enemies aim to burn you to a crisp!
Cosmo Police Galivan
A a side-scrolling action game that was released from Nichibutsu in 1985. Players are transformed into Galivan by holding the power crystal, and must destroy the Aku criminal organisation.
The Fairyland Story
Players controls the witch Ptolemy who must turn evil wizards, witches, and other enemies into cakes before pushing them off of the platform ledge. Get hit by an enemy and you are banished into bubble form.
Gradius III
Th final announcement of the weekend, originally releasing in 1989,. The game includes 10 levels with one being from a third-person perspective. The Japanese version adds a “Beginners” mode.
Green Beret
The Konami run and gun game Green Beret originally released in the arcades in 1985 and has been ported to numerous home systems, and is also known as Rush’n Attack in North America. The game is set in the Cold War with the player playing as a U.S. soldier who must save multiple POWs from execution.
Guzzler
Originally developed by Tehkan (Tecmo) in 1983 as a PacMan-style maze game. Players shoots liquid to kill monsters, eat food to replace the liquid, and put out the four fires where the monsters spawn in order to progress to the next maze. The game was also ported to the Sega’ SG-1000 console.
Kuri Kinton
A Taito title and side-scrolling beat ’em up from 1988 heavily inspired by both Dragon Ball and Fist of the North Star. In the game, player take control of a Chinese policeman who must rescue a senior policeman and his daughter by kicking and punching dastardly kidnappers.
Liquid Kids
A beloved Taito classic title, Liquid Kids which saw release in 1990 and also got an excellent PC Engine port/Turbo Grafx 16 port. A side-scrolling platformer which sees you play as the platypus Hipopo who must find his missing girlfriend Tamasun, rescue his friends, and defeat the evil Fire Demon with the aid of water bombs.
Nova 2001
An early shoot ’em up that originally released from UPL in 1983. Players control a fighter which can shoots in all directions. Its main purpose is to continue to defeat the swarms of attacking enemies that appear in each stage and to pick up any bonus markers that are left by the destroyed spacecraft.
Pettan Pyuu/Banbam
A 1984 maze game from Sunsoft, also known as Banbam. Players control a cure character called Pettan who must flip over titles in order to defeat the enemies. Hamster’s Satoshi Hamad, called it a “masterpiece” that has been “lost in time”.
Rabio Lepus/Rabbit Punch
Rabio Lepus (known as Rabbit Punch in the west) is a side-scrolling shoot ’em up from Video System that originally released in 1987 and was renamed Rabio Lepus Special in the latter PC Engine port.” The game sees a rabbit equipped with a rocket launcher who must destroy monsters and rescue the royal family of Bunnyland.
Rod Land
A platform action game from Jaleco, originally releasing in the arcades in 1990 and ported to home computers, in addition to the NES, and Game Boy. Tam and Rit must rescue their mother by defeating enemies with a magic rod.
Soccer
Nintendo’s 1985 arcade game Soccer is coming and will no doubt attract many fans.
Swimmer
A Tecmo game from 1982, Swimmer is a vertically scrolling title which involves players swimming upstream until they safely reach the treasure island. There are various obstacles such as logs, turtles, crabs, and water bugs, that seek to hinder you.
Thunder Dragon
A vertically scrolling shoot ’em up developed by NMK and releasied in the arcades in 1991. The game resembles Raiden, and is set in the future where players control a helicopter through eight stages filled with enemy vehicles, space craft, and mechs. There is also an end-of-level boss.
VS Tennis
Lastly, we have Nintendo’s 1984 arcade game VS Tennis which released in the arcades a month after the console release. This release allowed players to play against each other while the home version only allowed two-player co-op. In addition, Satoshi Hamada has said he is considering implementing the arcade’s four-player mode.
