RPG Maker MV is the newest game in the RPG Maker series. This series is known for giving players many tools to make their own RPG’s. It’s a brilliant idea and one that I’m glad someone chose to make into a game. While the RPG’s aren’t always perfect, being able to make an RPG is a dream come true for some. The tools are easy to use and; difficult to master, but in the end, it’s all about having fun. RPG Maker MV has a story to tell as the game begins. It’s the story of a young creator making their first game. The creator is the player, so the game starts with a fourth-wall break. I appreciate the joke and think it’s a way to bring in the player into the creative side of things. Players aren’t always going to feel ready to create, and this eases them in. This tutorial guides the players through an unfinished game. It offers up information about connecting areas and decreasing monster strength. There are many different parts to designing an RPG, and this game knows it. The tutorial might seem tedious, but the process of game making can be just that. This game offers up the tools necessary to make a game many could enjoy.
The character creation tools are robust too. Players will need to make multiple characters to populate their game. They can craft heroes and villains, whoever they’ll need. With plenty of character designs and color palettes, they are sure to find many designs. Have at it and create, create, create. Like the rest of the game, it will take time, but players will soon create many characters to use in any game they make in the future. The game will require the ability to speak a language. Players will need to add dialogue and relevant story information to push the game along. It might seem trivial, but this can take a decent amount of planning. Crafting a story worth playing might take time, but players will be proud of their work. Plus, seeing characters say the player’s lines is thrilling even if they are just standard anime-style characters.
Players get all of the tools they need to make any RPG they can think of making. There is a long list of characters players can use to make their parties. Players will enjoy the different looks and styles of each character. I was surprised by how many characters there were and had trouble choosing what characters to use. The game is easy to use, but it will take time to master the controls. Players will need to scroll through menus and adjust various values. There are plenty of things that players need to figure out. They’ll need to cast their story, select monsters, and even locations in which the characters will travel. The menus can be long, but with patience, players will craft something they will be proud they made. I struggled initially with the controls but soon found myself feeling good about them and myself. Tweaking the output of damage from monsters and delving into the nitty-gritty of RPG making is a cool thing. RPG Maker MV could be a cool game for players to pick up, especially if they are interested in game design. While it’s by no means perfect, the tools are there for some personal growth and knowledge of the subject.
RPG Maker MV makes solid old school RPG’s. This style of RPG is coming back in the form of indie titles, but it’s a good thing to see it. Old school RPG’s tend to be harder sometimes and have this nostalgic feeling about them. Jumping into an old school RPG is like sliding into a time capsule, as now the big RPG’s are modern spectacles of power and high-definition. RPG Maker MV is also great because it has a free version. This version has no creation tools but allows players to play any uploaded RPG. Having access to a wide variety of free fan-made RPG’s is a wondrous thing. The RPG’s take time to make, so they are usually quality games. People who go out of their way to use these tools will try harder because they can be rather intricate. Even if the player isn’t picking up the game, they can always download the lite version to see what is out there.
RPG Maker MV is a fantastic game and one that will help players make their very own RPG. The tools are robust but require a little work, so players will want to ready for that. Players will enjoy crafting stories, and adjusting their game, making it fun and playable. Will the player jump in and dream up a game, or will the idea stay locked away in their head forevermore?
