Gauntlet was one of the most influential games of all time, inspiring many classics like Diablo and Hammerwatch, and many modern games still take inspiration from the classic title. One such game is Battle Axe, which does not try to reinvent the formula, but instead tries to highlight what made it so good to begin with. Battle Axe is a beautifully designed throwback to the classics and is a true treat for fans. Often times games like this try to capture what made the original great but fail, so it is great to see one that succeeds.
Battle Axe sees you play as one of three characters, each with their own ways of attacking and dodging enemies, and the combat feels perfectly natural. This is a game that learned perfectly from its predecessors with precise controls, intense action and a fun challenge. The levels are designed perfectly, and there are powerups, health items, and weapons located in chests that you can store for later use when you are ready. The bosses do present a great challenge as well, and you will need to learn to dodge at the right time if you are to succeed.
The levels are not procedurally generated, but the infinite mode does have those along with no life limit so you can keep playing no matter how often you are killed. This may be fun for those who feel the arcade mode provides too much of a challenge for them, while also getting used to the gameplay and its mechanics. It is also great for when you complete the arcade mode in the end, as it provides a lot of replayability for those wanting more of the game.
Battle Axe has beautifully detailed art and amazing music that make it a stand out compared to many other Gauntlet imitators. This game was clearly a labor of love and the work put into it is top notch. Everything feels like the perfect culmination of the Gauntlet experience, and even takes some hints from the legendary Gauntlet IV in terms of story and shops, There are a nice amount of enemies always, and a nice variety so you are never fighting the same foes over and over again. In addition, the excellent level design is full of variety and really makes you feel you are in an epic quest.
If I had one fault, it would be that sometimes the attack locks up a bit, but other than that, this is a must play game. I highly recommend Battle Axe, as it is something truly special and shines bright in the indie scene.
