Bio-Ship Paladin is a rather unique shmup, because, in addition to the usual elements of a side-scrolling shooter, the game manages to have some new twists. The game has all the typical weapons used in horizontal scrollers, but also has a weapon that makes it stand out as well. This beam weapon can be manually targeted and aimed with a crosshair, to take out enemies with precision and accuracy.
This addition may seem small, but it adds a large level of strategy to the game that makes Bio-Ship Paladin feel very unique among horizontal shooters. The ship also has an armour gage, so this is not a one-hit death sort of game. The player can also pick up new armour and even upgrade the ship over time by picking up powerups, such as new weapons or making the ship larger and taking on new forms but taking damage will revert the ship to its prior form.
Bio-Ship Paladin is a good-looking game, with the visuals and sound being a standout for the genre. While the Mega Drive version would improve the visuals, the arcade version is no slouch in terms of presentation. One thing that needs to be mentioned though, is that the beam can generate some strong flashing lights depending on the power-up obtained, so those with health concerns should take precautions.
Bio-Ship Paladin takes place over nine levels, and each has its own set of enemies and obstacles. Many of said obstacles are actually hidden in the foreground and will require a number of playthroughs before the player gets the hang of it. It is a good thing then, that this release comes with the standard Arcade Archives options such as difficulty options and the number of lives.
Bio-Ship Paladin contains both the western and Japanese release of the game, as well as a Caravan mode where players can attain a high score within a five-minute period for online leaderboards. There is also Hi Score mode, where players have limited lives in order to get the highest score possible. These are all great additions and help give more to players trying the game.
Bio-Ship Paladin is recommended, not just because it has unique elements for a horizontal shmup, but because of how good it does the traditional shmup elements. The combat feels right, enemies are well designed, and bosses have in-depth fights. This is a well-made shmup, and one that all players can enjoy.
