Kunio-Kun fans in Japan have something to look forward to. While River City Girls was made by the western studio WayForward, it became a major hit in Japan as well and now a theatre company called Solid Star has revealed that it is working on a River City Girls play based on the original game. The play will make its debut on December 7th, but will only run until Dec. 11th, 2022.
There are not many details about the play at this time, besides that WayForward is not involved in any way. That said, it will be very interesting to see what comes of this, but one thing we probably will not see is many in the cast get seriously hurt and forced to barf.
Kunio-kun as a franchise has a long history with theatres in a different way, as several of the games are meant to be Kunio and the gang putting on stage plays, including River City Saga: Three Kingdoms and Downtown Special: Kunio-kun’s Historical Period Drama!, the latter of which is playable in the Double Dragon & Kunio-Kun Retro Brawler Bundle on modern systems. As such, it is very interesting to see River City Girls going in the opposite direction. Hopefully, if this does well, a play based on the upcoming River City Girls 2 will happen as well.
