Indie authors (just like indie developers) don’t often get enough credit or praise for their work. When I came across the book Blood Drops: A Collection of Horror Short Stories by WB Welch, I knew that I had to give it a try. I’m so happy that I did because what I found was a beautifully written and haunting collection of short stories that will certainly leave you thinking.
I occasionally dabble in the horror genre when choosing something to read, though it’s definitely not my favorite. In gaming, I do tend to favor the subgenre of sci-fi horror (BioShock or Dead Space, anyone?). However, I will say that WB Welch’s collection of short horror stories in Blood Drops was a great read. Each story was beautifully written—almost poetic in its structure and diction. The stories were varied in both length and content. There’s a little something for every horror fan in this collection.
Stories range from uncomfortable to downright disturbing. They capture the darker side of human nature. It’s like that instant when you pass over a bridge, and your mind briefly thinks about what it would be like to jump. That’s WB Welch’s style.
I blasted through the book at lightning speed as I felt like I just couldn’t put it down. I loved being able to pick it up a read a quick story in the midst of my daily activities, though some of the stories left me mulling them over for the rest of the day.
If you’re looking for extremely scary/can’t sleep at night after reading, this might not be your book. It’s not a “jump scare” type of horror. However, if you are looking for thoughtful psychological horror, I highly recommend this collection.
