Burger Time is an all time classic video game. It has endured in the public’s mind as a facet of pop culture when it comes to retro gaming, but not many talk about its sequel. Super Burge Time was released in 1990 by Data East, and was a different beast altogether. The game was multiplayer for one, but there were other changes as well that made the experience different.
The best way to describe this game is as a cross between the original game and Bubble Bobble. It takes the best aspects of both games and experiments in interesting ways. The recent re-release on the Nintendo Switch has allowed this forgotten classic to get a second chance and I was blown away. The game has a strong amount of challenge for single player mode, much more than I had expected. It is the multiplayer mode however, that is where the game shines.
Super Burger Time is visually appealing, much more than its predecessor and the difficulty is much higher as well. I love just how well the game has been adapted for its re-release on the Switch, as the game’s multiplayer proved to be extremely addictive, especially on the go. I would say that this is an excellent game to use as an example of why the arcade re-releases that are being done by Flying Tiger Entertainment are important. Games like this slipped through the cracks unfortunately, but that should not have been the case.
Super Burger Time is a game would have been right at home on the Super NES and would no doubt have found a good audience there. As I understand it, Super Burger Time did not get a wide release in the arcades, which again proves why this series is so important. We need to preserve the classics as much as we can, because there are so greats that people should experience. Given the success of games like Bubble Bobble and others of its kinds, it seems bizarre that this game has languished in obscurity. It is superior in every way to the original and I could not get enough of it.
Once more I must comment on FTE’s work on the presentation and production values, as they truly went above and beyond to replicate the arcade experience as well as giving us numerous other display options. This is a very high quality release, and there was clearly love and care put into every part of it. This is a preserved gem that has been given a second chance and this chance should not be wasted. I fully recommend this game and suggest you all check this out.
