Steven Universe Save the Light is a fantastic RPG set in the Steven Universe Universe. This game tells an original story of Steven and his gem friends taking on a wicked gem. As it is original there is a chance for something new to blossom. While it takes all of the magic of the show it does infuse a little new magic. This game is a sequel to the mobile game Attack the Light and has an original story co-written by series creator Rebecca Sugar. The characters are even voice acted which is a plus. The charm of the show is fully on display and the characters are as magical as ever. The style of the game is similar to the show but seems slightly more cartoonish than usual. I appreciate that they took the essence of the show and tweaked it a little.
This game is a real-time, turn-based battle RPG. Players will take turns using Star Power to attack their foes. Some attacks take more Star Power but can hit multiple enemies. Players will need to balance the amount of damage needed to win with the chance of defeat. Choose wisely or else the gems will fall to the monsters that roam the Earth. The battle system is often quick so players will need to keep on their toes. This game has eight playable characters which is more than the last game’s roster. Players can play as Steven and the Gems of course. But they can also play as Greg, Connie, Peridot and eventually Lapis. These characters all come with their powers from the show so players can duke it out using their favorites. The Steven Universe series is built upon battle so it’s great to have an RPG in the universe.
Players can even fuse in this game when certain conditions are met. Players can fuse the gems into powerful beings that will wreck the competition. From Smoky Quartz to Alexandrite, and even Stevonnie all of the favorites are accounted for. It’s great to battle it out as these super-powered characters as they really can turn the tide of battle. The enemies in this game are also different from anything seen in the show. While they are the same, the creators were able to make their gem beasts. I appreciate the fact that they were able to make new beasts that do fit into the universe. It’s fun seeing what people come up with, and with this game, I think they created quality monsters.
The world is a beautiful 3D world with a 2D twist. It’s a treat to run around the world and visit iconic Steven Universe locations. There are a plethora of different places to visit. Some are modern and some are ancient. From ruins to Beach City and beyond there is much to see and discover in this game. The music within the game is of course infused with the greatness of the show. I always enjoy the music in this series and the game captures that essence quite nicely. It fits with wherever the player goes, and I’m sure Rebecca Sugar had a say in that. Music is an important aspect of the series so she obviously wouldn’t let them dishonor the series with awful music.
Steven Universe Save the Light is an awesome Turn-Based Game based on a fantastic series. With tons of jokes and references, players are sure to have a good time. The story is unlike others in the series so players ought to enjoy themselves. Steven and the Gems have to take out a rogue gem named Hessonite, will the player help them save the day?
