Contra was a beloved run n gun series games knew well, and while the recent entry was divisive, the series still inspired numerous other games. One such game that took inspiration is Biolab Wars, which has now come to Nintendo Switch thanks to Forever Entertainment. A run n gun like its inspiration, Biolab Wars manages to put its own spin on the genre at times and create its own identity.
Unlike many run n gun games like the aforementioned Contra or Metal Slug, Biolab Wars is not a one hit death game. You have a life bar and can find health powerups as you continue throughout the levels. At the same time, you will find powerups and sub weapons, so there is definitely some familiarity here. There are three main characters to choose from, giving you some variety, but they all play mostly similar with only some minor differences to add variety.
What I like about Biolab Wars is that this is a game that knows what it wants to be: a cheap alternative for those who want the classic style gameplay from their childhood. The visuals are decent and there is a sense of what you see is what you get. This is a good thing, because the action is rather fun. The game starts off slow and easy, but gradually increases the challenge as the game continues. You never feel overwhelmed, but you do get a decent challenge that will satisfy you. the action changes up often and the gameplay has enough variety to keep you entertained as you play.
The music is also a high point, as the game manages to capture the feel of classic NES action games and channels them properly. Sometimes it is okay to wear your inspiration on your sleeve and Biolab Wars doe that here. Yes, there is a story, but it can be ignored fully to be honest. The intensity is at the right level and the game never outstays its welcome. I recommend Biolab Wars as an ideal game for those wanting a run n gun fix.
