Super Mario Bros U was a fantastic 2 D adventure for the Wii U and it is back and better than ever in Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. As someone who doesn’t necessarily love platformers I don’t have many memories of this game, but playing it now, I can say I do enjoy it. This game is the complete package of both Super Mario Bros U and Super Luigi U with a new playable character and that is a good thing.

Super Mario Bros U tells a similar story of Bowser kidnapping Peach and sending the kingdom into chaos. This time joined once again by his faithful Koopalings he sends Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Toadette to the far reaches of the kingdom. Yes, Toadette is finally playable in a 2 D Mario game, and so many people are thrilled about playing as Toad’s counterpart.

Toadette herself is a fun character to play and it adds something new to the game. With the Super Crown it becomes Peachette and with that is considered an Easy mode character. There is also the opportunity to play as Nabbit, who is invincible. With these two characters in tow, it is possible for anyone willing to play this game. It is nice to basically play as Peach even though it’s really just Toadette in a crown.

Super Luigi U is of course back and better than ever. This game is all about him in the spotlight, though players can choose to play as another one of the characters. Though thankfully with this game Mario is still unplayable and. This game is trickier than New Super Mario U as Luigi can skid far easier, making it necessary for more precise platforming. Every level in this mode is also essentially a speed run: players must navigate the levels skillfully in order to beat them adding another layer of difficulty.

Super Luigi U is also playable right out the gate so if players have already completed the first game they don’t have to worry about completing it again. It is a lot harder running through this adventure so the player should only take part if they are up to the challenge. I have to say it is great when Nintendo does at least add the option to play a harder version of Mario. This game gets intense at times and honestly, I am happy I never took up the challenge when the game originally released.

This game also brings back challenge mode in which the game hurls challenges for the player to undertake. There are four different categories of challenges to undertake giving players a chance to test their mettle. There are Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1 Up Rally, and Special challenges available for players to take on. These challenges are added organically as the player beats levels. These challenges can be rather daunting but in the grand scheme of things, this will add hours of play time to the game.

Boost mode is also playable and can be played with up to four players. Players can also use Mii’s if they are tired of playing as Mario and the gang. This mode is all about collecting coins and speeding up the gameplay. In this mode, there are eight different challenge packs perfect for playing as many times as the player wants. These packs contain a variety of courses with their own challenges and are fun if the player wants a little bit of New Super Mario fun.

There is also a Coin Battle Mode where players battle to collect the most coins. This is a fun mode to play to mix things up. In this mode, there is even a coin edit mode so players can have their own turn at making coin battle stages to play against their friends. This is really just another fun mode that the game includes adding some more multiplayer fun.

All in all, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is a great game and one that fans of the series will enjoy. If players haven’t played this game before because they didn’t pick up a Wii U now is certainly a good chance for them to do so. If the player has an itch for 2D fun or just wants to play as Toadette than New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe may just be the game to play. The Kingdom is in upheaval and only this rather standard group can save the day, will the player help them out?
