Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey is an interesting game. Imagine the great visual storytelling of the Trine series, but attempts to take its gameplay in another direction. that direction seems to want to be a touching story, but I found it to be more on the absurdist side. The plot kicks off with a mother Bilby who must find her children, but the fantasy elements that come in just make everything feel like a mishmash of games. It eventually finds its balance, but the start of the game really threw me for a loop.
The story does get much better, and I won’t give spoilers here. What I will say is that the game has a beautiful art style and amazing level design. While the story was distracting at times, the game itself more than made up for it. The puzzles were unique and had a very good twist involving you needing to look at them from a literal different perspective.
It is not all sunshine though, as I found the voice acting to not be the best. I do not know why, but it irked me a bit. Other than that, the only real downside I will mention is that this is not a game to play on keyboard. You will get frustrated to no end and it is far better to use a controller.
The game responds extremely well with a controller, and you will enjoy not just the unique puzzles, but also the quirks in the level design that give Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey a sense of wonder. There is some beautiful music as well to create a sense of storybook wonder and while I feel the story itself is a bit too out there, Macrotis: A Mother’s Journey definitely has enough in it to warrant a recommendation.
