KEMCO has a bit of a hit or miss record with their RPGs. What I mean is that some are decent, but many feel like a sort of paint by numbers game. One game that really stood out to me though was Asdivine Hearts. It didn’t exactly break new ground for the RPG genre, but it did have a unique feel to it and had some very interesting ideas. Now KEMCO has brought the sequel to the Nintendo Switch and I must admit that I have been looking forward to this one for a while.

Asdivine Hearts II is a game that fits perfectly with the description of bigger and better. Rather than just feeling like an expansion to the first game, there are new abilities and innovations added. These go a long way to continue giving Asdivine Hearts a unique identity among KEMCO’s roster of RPG titles.

The visuals are better than ever and feel very sharp. They aren’t extremely amazing, but they definitely feel like an improvement over the first game. The visual effects also seem to be dialed back in a good way. In the first game, the visual effects were sometimes a little overpowering and too intense for my eyes. This game however, has the effects at a perfect level.

The new abilities and characters all feel like a great addition to the series as I said, but what stood out the most to me was how KEMCO is trying new things. You need to think more, and it just feels more involved. The battles also have a nice amount of touches. You feel strong at first, which is appropriate given the first game. Once the story gets going however, the battles get more intense.

Where the game doesn’t always work out well is the narrative. Its not bad, and I rather liked it at times, especially the endings, but it feels like the developers really chose one aspect from the first story and stretched it out a bit much. It doesn’t detract from the overall game, but I feel it could have been handled better.

Overall, I love Asdivine Hearts II. Its everything I want in a sequel, storytelling issues aside. If you want a good RPG to try out on Switch, this is a good place to look.
