I was a big fan of Knights of Pen and Paper when it first came out. It was a fun and playful take on RPGs, both tabletop and videogame wise. I get that the game wasn’t for everyone, but I genuinely enjoyed it, especially when it came to Switch. It is for this reason that I was excited for its sequel to come to Switch, but is it just more of the same?

Knights of Pen and Paper 2 definitely keeps a lot of what made the original work, but has some nice additions as well. New character classes are introduced, but more than that the gameplay just feels more polished and refined. It feels like the first game was where the developers got to try out a crazy idea, but now want to polish it and make it more amazing.

The combat is reworked slightly and quests are more intuitive, but the biggest improvement is that everything just feels more involved.  Certain quests help you unlock character classes, but you can keep doing the quests to fight more monsters. There are also now multiple ways to complete quests, and tweaks to how individual characters work. Some tweaks such as individual dice rolls for resting can add some more difficulty by forcing you to be more strategic, but additional items allow you to give individual characters an edge as well.

Knights of Pen and Paper 2 feels like a sequel that plays with being a sequel. Not to spoil the story, but there is an awareness of how the game is carrying on and needs to step up. There are some things that don’t work, such as some of the changes to difficulty via individual dice rolls for resting, but a lot does work. Knights of Pen and Paper 2 is a lot more involving and a more in depth RPG. I really like what was done here and fully recommend it.
