Who doesn’t love eating. Its one of life’s greatest pleasures and finding new recipes is always fun. But what happens when you want to look for recipes that are so horrifying, you might go mad at the taste? Well then you have prepared a recipe from the Necronomnomnom, the forbidden tome of recipes inspired by Lovecraftian tales!
This was an interesting book to read, both as a cookbook and as a Lovecraftian work as well. The book is divided into two main sections, one a straight cookbook, and one that shows each dish as a horrific ritual meant for an evil purpose. These are further divided into the usual sections of appetizers, entrees and so on. I must note here, that I follow a strictly Kosher diet, so some of the recipes were ones I just could not do at all. That said, I tried as many as I could and found them to actually be pretty tasty. For the recipes I couldn’t try or modify, I had friends try them in order to see what they think.
For the fictional part of the book, each recipe is given a detailed background as to what horrific ritual it relates to, and these are both funny in terms of metahumor and actually well written in terms of horror. Lovecraft fans will definitely enjoy this, as it perfectly captures the Lovecraftian style of horror, however there is an issue. While I enjoyed some of the recipes, the book does have a problem with the fact that the book doesn’t depict the recipes, and that can be an issue as you may not know if you pulled off the look right. the initial section of the book is also a bit vague as to what the recipes are, but the second half does make it more clear what goes into the recipes. Be aware of the division between the fictional and non fictional parts of the book, or you will get confused quickly. I think adding in pictures would have made this division better and more clear, and helped the presentation flow better.
Overall, The Necronomnomnom: Recipes and Rites from the Lore of H. P. Lovecraft is a great treat for Lovecraft fans and those who want to try something different for their cooking. It is a treat for many, and I recommend this.
