Yu-Gi-Oh Legacy of the Duelist is the complete version of the game released in 2017. This game has all the Yu-Gi-Oh fun any fan could handle and includes a story mode. This game certainly is the best in the game series and is rather definitive. As of right now it is the most complete Yu-Gi-Oh game to date and is a true treat. Yu-Gi-Oh is a card game that has been popular since 1999. The card game has gotten surprisingly harder to play as time has passed. I am only familiar with the dueling from the earlier seasons. So jumping in and trying the new duel methods does get confusing. Though it is remedied by the tutorials the game offers.
Players will build a deck from all the cards available. They can make any sort of deck they want and that is part of the fun. With over 9000 cards to choose from the deck building is unlimited. It is surprising to see so many cards that I’ve never seen before which is part of the fun. Player’s will never know how the duels will turn out because the deck never gives out the same cards in the same order. Yu-Gi-Oh is a card game all about summoning monsters and taking out an opponent’s life points. Sometimes the duels are attached to the player’s souls but usually are just for the competition. It’s a game that involves playing magic and trap cards to buff the player and hurt the enemy. Use the right cards to take down the foe, but never overstock the deck with high-level monsters!
This game has every different summon method, from regular, to fusion, to XYZ, Synchro, Pendulum, and even Link Summoning. The game offers guides on how to summon, and the summon methods to get progressively more intricate. I was honestly rather lost with Link Summoning, as there are quite a few steps. This series has been around for twenty years so it makes sense that the rules would need to change over time. The in-game guides take place in the form of duels so players can learn by dueling which does help out a lot. The monsters that are the most important even have their summoning animation. I’m a little disappointed more monsters don’t have summoning animations. It would have been cool to at least have the monsters floating over their cards like the DS game. But with over 9000 cards that just wasn’t possible.
This game has a story mode where players can play through every story from the TV series. They duel through all the series and a few duels from the latest one. It’s great to see the series in this way, as it highlights the duels and tells the story. Though double duels that are rather iconic are not playable which is a letdown. The characters look great and even though they aren’t voiced the energy of them is ever-present. I enjoy seeing the characters interact as I remember the show and how great it was. I was quite a fan of the series years ago, and playing through the story is quite a treat. I imagine it would be too much to have the voice actors voice the characters but it still is the Yu-Gi-Oh I know and love.
Players can play with show based decks which make it far easier. But they can also use their decks which might make these duels child’s play. I would go with the idea of playing through the story with the character-based decks before unleashing the player deck on the unsuspecting characters. The story-based decks aren’t necessarily based on the series they are used in. It’s possible to duel certain duelists and have them use cards from the later series. This might take away from the fun for fans who were hoping the characters to have decks inline with the story. For example, Mako Tsunami has the Legendary Fisherman in the Duelist Kingdom when he only has the card in Battle City. It’s a little nitpicky but it shouldn’t be this way.
By playing through the story players will unlock the ability to play as other duelists. They can play as say, Mai Valentine and beat Joey in a duel. It’s nice to see the other side of the duel and have the other side win. This also unlocks their favorite cards which can strengthen a deck. They will also unlock booster packs based on certain characters in the game. It’s important to choose packs that will strengthen the player’s deck of choice. Players will gain points through playing the story which can be used to buy packs.
It’s amazing to go to the in-game store to buy packs though it is no substitution for buying real packs. Even now I will sometimes buy packs simply because I love the rush of opening a fresh pack. I always get a rush when I pick up a pack of cards, open it, and find a card I’d never imagine I’d get. Though this is a good substitute as there are so many cards to get and the only way to get more is to simply duel. The store continues to slowly open up as players complete the story and that gives the game a long playtime. Duelists can even challenge each other to local and online duels. It’s fantastic taking on challengers near and far in duels. This is a great way for fans of the series to use their decks. Imagine having a friend who lives across the ocean, players can make decks and duel each other from the comfort of their own home.
If the player is a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh they are sure to enjoy this game. It offers up a lot more than simply playing the game. This game offers hours of fun for a rather cheap price point and that is always a good thing. With hours of dueling and cards to collect is it time for the player to D-D-D-D-DDD-Duel?
