The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is considered one of, if not the best game of all time. It is a game Nintendo has always sought to top, and until Breath of the Wild, had not done so (though many feel OoT still is better). The game has been re-released more than once over the years, and received an enhanced port on the 3DS that did touch up a few details but left most of the game alone. This got me thinking about how the game has many ideas that have aged well and many that haven’t. With the upcoming (seemingly forever delayed) remake of Final Fantasy 7, I realized that a remake of Ocarina of Time would be amazing as well.
Before I go any further, I need to state that I am not talking about a simple HD remaster but a full remake done from the ground up. Some may feel there is no point in this, as the game is a classic, but I disagree. First of all, this would be a chance to truly fix the major flaws in the game. The 3DS version tweaked the water temple for instance, but could not fully rectify the situation. This temple could be completely redone for example, and changes like this in other areas would help the game shine even better.
The second reason I disagree that a remake wouldn’t add much, is that a remake would allow the developers to finally accomplish some of the ideas that they had for the game but could not do. These ideas also include the cancelled remake/expansion Ura Zelda. While Miyamoto has said that Ura Zelda became Ocarina of Time Masterquest, there has been much doubt about that, since Masterquest has very little of the ideas from Ura Zelda. For example sword beams and more dungeons were planed and it is believed that Ura Zelda would resolve the Zora’s Domain storyline.
Many ideas did end up recycled into later games such as the aforementioned Breath of The Wild and Majora’s Mask, but the fact is that recreating the lost Ura Zelda content for a remake would be a truly amazing experience. Not only would a new generation be able to play Ocarina of Time with the same wonder we all did back on the N64, but so would longtime players.
Even if the extra content is not brought in, just making changes in a full remake would provide a unique experience. With a fantastic game as a base and Nintendo’s expertise, a remake of Ocarina of Time could be the greatest game of all time. There is so much potential that can be done here, that I am surprised this has not been attempted yet.
I am curious what you all think of this. Please share your opinion with me on the matter.
