Nintendo has been more open to new ideas lately. They have done crossover games such as Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Star Fox in Starlink among others. One of these others that has stood out to me is Pokken Tournament, the Pokemon fighting game from Bandai Namco. This game took a beloved RPG and helped create a great fighting game out of the concept, and this is something I would like to see more of. Nintendo has a fighting series with Smash, but more fighting games are always good and they have other series that would fit the fighting genre well. One such series, is the Fire Emblem series.
Fire Emblem would lend itself naturally to the fighting game genre, since several of the characters have already been adapted well in the Super Smash Bros series. In addition, weapons based fighting games have been done well in both 2D and 3D style by companies like Bandai Namco and Arc System Works respectively. With the varied styles of Fire Emblem characters, there is a lot to work with for a fun experience.
In my opinion, a Fire Emblem fighting game would work best following in the style of Blazblue since it would incorporate both the weapons and magic of the series. It would also keep things fast paced and energetic that keeps players on the edge of their seats. Alternatively, this could also be done in a 3D form closer to the style of the SoulCalibur series, where it would be equally strategic but on a more technical level. However, one other possibility that I have to consider is handing the game to SNK to develop in the style of Samurai Shodown. They have the skill and expertise to make a weapons based fighter like this.
Many debate the merits of Smash Bros as a fighting game, or if it even counts as one but the fact remains that the series has showed that Fire Emblem has a lot of potential to work well as a fighting game. Smash has even managed to bring in more of the magic elements of the series to change things up and give more variety with characters such as Corrin.
Fire Emblem is a series with many characters, as we have seen in Fire Emblem Heroes, and a massive crossover game that takes the various characters from the series and places them into the fighting genre would be very welcome. There is so much that can be done and this is something I hope to see Nintendo do. There is so much potential for a game like this on the Switch.
