Story:

Playing as Jesse Rentier, you’re a part of a secret organization called the Rentier Institute. They are tasked with taking down the vampiric forces that are preying on humanity. To take down the organization, you will need to gather parts to put the gauntlet back together that can be used to reverse their ability to hide among the population.

Gameplay:

The game is a 3rd person shooter that has you facing groups of enemies in arena-style rooms. Survive the room by killing enough or all of the enemies and you get to continue to traverse to the next area. Each area has branching paths and hidden items to be found which helps to encourage exploration. You can play the game solo or can play the game co-op as long as you get far enough into the game.

Jesse can use hand-to-hand combat along with a wide range of weapons to dispatch enemies. In addition to weapons and hand-to-hand combat, there are a wide array of abilities to learn and upgrade along your journey.

Graphics and Performance:

The environments in the game look really good with a lot of attention to detail. From the old west towns to the firey mountain ranges, the game will have you stopping in your tracks just to admire the scenery. Character and enemy models are highly detailed but lack much in the way of realism.

Playing the game on the Series X, textures pop and camera movement is silky smooth. The previous generation has muddier textures and slower camera movement. Load times between the two are what you would come to expect.

Sound:

The sounds of enemies sound creepy and menacing. The heavy metal soundtrack makes you feel like a total badass and fits the game perfectly. Character voice acting helps to give them personality, but the immersive feeling this brings is broken when at times, characters’ lips don’t move or match their voice.

Conclusion:

Evil West plays like a modern take on Devil May Cry with the look and feel of Van Helsing. Pairing this with the amazing metal soundtrack, the great graphics, and the gripping story makes this one an unforgettable gaming experience. If you’re a fan of the games that this pays tribute to, this is a game I would highly recommend as it’s a must-play.
