A Hero and a Garden is a short but sweet game about a hero who finds a mysterious garden. This hero is looking for a princess, and on his way to save her, he causes mass destruction. He finds himself locked up for his crimes against the peaceful monsters and slowly makes friends with them. This game even has multiple endings that the player can watch simply by playing the game once.
A Hero and a Garden once again tells the story of a hero trying to rescue a princess. He doesn’t think that maybe the princess is happy to be out of the castle. He has vowed to save her by any means necessary and soon finds himself in quite a predicament. They lock him up to punish him and order him to grow berries. He might not know why he stuck here at first, but having so much time alone changes a person. He interacts with a few villagers like the helpful Doctor Horns at his store. They come for berries, and he provides them. The player will get to know the characters as the hero does. Slowly but surely working his way into their good graces. They realize he was trying to help the princess but don’t like how he went about it.
Growing berries is easy, and players will have to keep tapping to pick them. They will have a little help as the witch gives him a helper. The berries will slowly collect, and as they do, players will be able to fill job orders. The necessary berries increases as the short game progresses, so always be picking. In the end, the player chooses a best friend of sorts for the hero. This character goes to the festival with the hero. While nothing seems to be canon, each ending is sweet in its way. The characters all get a decent amount of development, and each ending makes sense. Plus, completing the game once lets players see all the endings.
This game has a unique art style all to its own. The game isn’t flashy, and the characters don’t regularly show tons of emotion, but they convey them well. It’s a little cartoonish but also peaceful. The game is vaguely like a comic but in a more subdued way. All in all, it’s just cutesy enough to be adorable but also feel like a serious game. A Hero and a Garden is a great, albeit short visual novel. It has a unique style, and the characters are all quite sweet. The game might not be too long, but it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Farming for berries is easy, and the player will surely grow to like the characters. The hero caused a lot of problems, will the player help him clean things up?
