Fire Emblem is a series with many characters, as we have seen in Fire Emblem Heroes, and is no stranger to trying different genres. Games such as Fire Emblem Warriors showed off the versatility of the IP, and there is more that can be done, especially with Nintendo being more open to collaborations. After the success of Pokken Tournament, another fighting game based on a Nintendo IP would be welcome and Fire Emblem would be an ideal choice for this style of game. and a massive crossover game that takes the various characters from the series and places them into the fighting genre would be very welcome.
Fire Emblem would lend itself naturally to the fighting game genre, especially when considering the way several of the characters have been adapted well in the Super Smash Bros series. Weapons-based fighting games have done well in both 3D and 2D styles by companies like Bandai Namco and SNK with SoulCalibur and Samurai Shodown respectively, and this opens many possibilities for an adaptation. Considering the varied styles and weapons of the Fire Emblem characters, there is a lot to work with in order to create a fun experience.
One way a Fire Emblem fighting game would work well would be following in the style of Blazblue since it would incorporate both the weapons and magic of the series, and such a game would also keep things fast-paced and energetic. Alternatively, this could also be done in a 3D form closer to the style of the SoulCalibur series, where it would be more strategic and work on a more technical level. However, one other possibility to consider is handing the game to SNK to develop in the style of Samurai Shodown, which is one of the premier weapons-based 2D fighting games.
While many will debate the merits of Smash Bros as a fighting game, the fact remains that Smash has shown that Fire Emblem has a lot of potential to work well as a fighting game. Smash has even managed to bring in more of the magic elements of the series to change things up and give more variety with characters such as Corrin. All of these would be excellent elements in a specialized fighting game and would highlight the unique nature of Fire Emblem.
Nintendo has a fighting series with Smash Bros., but there is so much more the company can do to explore the genre. Considering how much attention Fire Emblem gets in Smash Bros. this could be a great chance to build on what they have established. If the right partner can be found, then this is an idea that needs to be made.
