Last week, I argued for five fighting game characters that would fit well in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, This week I want to look at five Nintendo characters who would be a good fit, but with a twist. I am specifically looking at retro characters from Nintendo’s past. They can have made an appearance after the GameCube as a one off, but the bulk of their appearances were in the past.

With that said, lets go.

Mike Jones

StarTropics is one of Nintendo’s most neglected IPs and its star Mike Jones could easily fit into Smash Bros. Using his yoyo…er I mean “Island Star” and other abilities and weapons from the two games, Mike could actually have a very creative moveset. I can image Sakurai making him kind of similar to the Belmonts in terms of his main weapon, while also giving him elements of Link as well by mixing the Yoyo and baseball bat, as well as his long range weapons..  Mike would also bring with him some great music and would shine a spotlight on a hidden gem from Nintendo.

Captain Syrup

The Wario Land series is one that many fans have fond memories of, and among the unique characters in the series was Wario’s nemesis Captain Syrup. Captain Syrup is a pirate thief, a technological genius and she is one of the few who gets the better of Wario. Her moveset could utilize her attacks from the games, as well as making use of her minions and mechanical weaponry. The Wario series is one that needs a new representative, and more female characters are needed as well, and Captain Syrup would be a perfect fit with how unique she can be.

Urban Champion

Nintendo’s first fighting game character, Urban Champion is a choice one may not suspect at first, but there is potential here. Urban Champion was not as bad as people think, as argued by my good friend IndieGamerChick, and the character could work as a brawler and a reference to other earlier NES games in a way that is similar to how Duck Hunt incorporates other light gun games. UC’s moves could even reference other sports games from Nintendo and perhaps get people to reconsider their stance on this misunderstood game.

Lolo

Before the pink puffball, there was a blue sphere. The Adventures of LoLo was a small NES release worked on by both Masahiro Sakurai and, the late, Satoru Iwata. It is clear Sakurai-san still shares a love of the creature! LoLo was immortalized as the Kirby miniboss LoLoLo. He remains an active part of the Kirby franchise to this day. Sakurai could do much with Lolo and the puzzle series the character came from, and the result could be one of the more innovative newcomers.

An NES Pro Wrestling Rep

NES Pro Wrestling is one of the more interesting early wrestling games, ( and one Nintendo should bring back), and Smash Bros has touched on wrestling characters with Incineror, but a wrestler from Nintendo’s own wrestling game would be interesting. Starman is an obvious choice, but so is the Tiger Mask inspired Great Puma, or the Ric Flair inspired King Slender. The moves could be reminiscent of arcade style wrestling games that were over the top and allow more creative actions.

And there we have it. Whom would you like from Nintendo’s past to join the roster?
