Space Hulk Deathwing is a rather unique beast and yet not unique at the same time. It is in the style of a co-op run n gun survival game much like Left 4 dead, but also has elements of Vermintide based on the Warhammer Fantasy series and brings in some ideas of its own. The result is a a game that can only be described as fanservice for fans of Warhammer 40K while also being surprisingly accessible to newcomers. I was honestly shocked how well I adapted to the game, both in single player and online and while I have a complaint I will discuss, I must say that I was more than impressed with the overall package.

Space Hulk Deathwing is set on board one of the eponymous Space Hulk vessels that has become overrun with genestealers. You play as a Dark Angles librarian of the elite first company known as the Deathwing and you will join others in exploring the Space Hulk and dealing with the genestealer menace. From the moment you begin the game, it truly feels like it has captured the spirit of the Warhammer 40 K universe. The attention to detail is amazing and there is a clear love of the franchise present. There are numerous references to be found and lore is perfectly accurate as of the time of the game’s release.

The game had originally launched with a number of bugs and other issues, but this enhanced edition works to fix that. The level design still has its flaws, but overall the game is indeed better. The combat is more fun, the weapons and armour have a lot more variety to them, and the developers added modes as well. While it doesn’t perfectly address all issues, it does address many of the major ones. Gone are the poor animations and lack of variety, gone is the lackluster combat and now in their place is a refined experience based on what fans want. I still think the level design is not the best, but it is okay for what it is. What I have an issue with, is the lighting in the earlier stages more than is necessary. I didn’t notice this on PC, so I wonder why this is in the PS4 version.

Flaws aside, the combat as I mentioned, is rather fun. You will need to be strategic in what you do of course, but this is also a survival run n gun game and therefore you must always be on your toes. Playing with others was fun, but I was truly impressed with what is there for single player content. It is a well designed product and I loved playing every minutes of the experience even with the flaws I mentioned. I love that this is an immersive experience into Warhammer 40K and feel that it is a worthy addition to the franchise. I recommend checking this one out!
