Action RPGs are one of my favourite genres of games, and I happen to be a fan of Warhammer and Warhammer 40K. As such, Warhammer 40K Inquisitor: Martyr seems like a game made for me specifically. A Diablo style game set in the grimdark world and using its extensive lore seemed like a surefire hit, and I must say the end product came very close, but issues are present.

To begin, the game uses three main classes whose roles will instantly make sense to people familiar with the genre. The basic tanks, rouges and mages are all here, but worked into the lore in a  meaningful way, when represented by Crusaders, Assassins and Psykers. Each class has multiple variations that allow for more replay value, and getting used to all of them will take time but is worth it.  Each has their strengths and drawbacks as based on the established rules. Psykers for example, run risks of their powers causing them problems from overuse for example.

I want to confirm that that yes there is a lack of game balance, there are refinement issues and the game overall has some feeling of not being quite done.  For example, enemies and areas tend to repeat themselves often as the game progresses. This is something I have seen often in Warhammer 40K games, and while understandable, it does come across as there not having been enough time to finetune everything. This is the reason Spacehulk: Deathwing needed a massive update to entice players back.

All this being said however, Warhammer 40K Inquisitor Marty is a true treat for fans of the series. There is a large amount of plot and references that aren’t usually in this genre, and the game goes out of its way tp provide heavy fanservice, which is very much appreciated. What  also needs to be mentioned is how the game constantly introduces new RPG mechanics. At first it is just a matter of refinements to existing ideas like crafting, but then it gets deeper. I would say that this is both a strength of the game and a weakness. It is a strength, in that it offers so much unique gameplay for everyone that we do not normally get for example. On the other hand though, many people will be overwhelmed and simply ignore the large amount of work put in here.

I loved my time with Warhammer 40 000 Inquisitor Martyr, and I plan to keep playing some more. It will not be for everyone, but for fans of the franchise it is highly recommended. All citizens of the Imperium can do their duty for the Emperor!
