Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity is a fantastic game that already provides hours of content. With the new DLC that was released a few weeks ago, the game adds even more fun to the mix. This DLC update might seem small, but it adds quite a punch to the already sprawling game. With another DLC pack on the way, this one should sate fans while they wait for the other installment.
Hyrule Warriors is a tense game as it is because of the era in the Zelda Timeline it takes place. The game is set one hundred years before Breath of the Wild and tells the story of what happens to Link. Though through the power of time travel, a new character and some familiar faces appear to aid our hero, fundamentally changing the events.
The DLC adds a few new things into the mix, and they all add content to an already robust game. One of the coolest additions is the addition of the research lab. Players can take down quests of sorts by playing the game, to gain loot. There are quite a few things for players to earn, and some can change the game. Being able to buy the healing apples, for instance, is a great boon, as some of the fights can get monstrously hard.
Players will play the game and return to the lab when they have the prerequisite materials. Through facing down monsters and fighting bosses they will acquire several things from the flail for Link, the Master Cycle Zero for Zelda, and even a playable Guardian. It might not be the most expansive tree, but it will take time to collect the goods, so fans should have a lot of fun clearing the tree.
To clear the tree, players will need to complete a variety of areas. The newest style is the harder difficulty fights. Taking down one of these fights nets the player a special item. These bosses are not to be taken lightly, and their health is insanely high. Players need to be on their toes, as these fights are challenging. Fighting a super-powered Talus with a weak flail took me 20 minutes, and it was quite a slog.
Link’s flail is a great weapon and one that he hasn’t used before in any capacity. Players will have fun taking out enemies with three different flails. Link still is quite fast, even if he does have to lug Guardian arms around for one of the sets. This Link is unburdened, and his fierceness in battle is already shown by how he can take out swarms of super-powerful enemies.
Zelda gets a new weapon too in the form of the Master Cycle Zero. Speeding around the battlefield on this majestic cycle is a sight to behold. She’s far faster than usual and can hit pretty hard too. Players can even unleash a charged attack which can disrupt enemies quite well. Zelda and the Master Cycle Zero are no easy opponents, but it’s nice to see the developers implement such a cool idea into the game.
Guardians are horrifying mechanical monstrosities taken over by Ganon. These bots have been a horrible thing to encounter in Breath of the Wild because they always seem to show up at the wrong moment. It’s pretty fantastic to play as a Guardian because now players can take down monsters and imagine at least the fear in their eyes. The guardian is a powerful but slower unit, but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to take down all the enemies.
The DLC also adds an apocalyptic mode to this game. The game itself can already be rather challenging, as the enemies surround the player so fast. With apocalyptic mode, the kid gloves come off, and it does indeed become survival of the fittest. For those looking for a real challenge, the apocalyptic mode is the mode for you.
Age of Calamity is a great Warriors game, and this DLC adds a lot of fun to the mix. The characters shine, and the fights do become quite arduous. With new weapons, quests, and a difficulty spike, this DLC is perfect for new and old players alike. If players haven’t played this game, now’s the perfect chance to jump in and see what happened one hundred years ago.
