I like fighting games, that much I have made clear with my previous reviews. I like all kinds of fighting games, even the very off beat and quirky ones and enjoy finding news titles all the time. This is why I was excited to learn Fight of Gods was coming to Switch. I would finally get a chance to see what all the hype was about and if it was a worthy title. Unfortunately, the game seemed to be all hype based on the controversial premise.

For those who do not know, Fight of Gods is about mythological and religious figures duking it out in a brawl. It is over the top and intentionally offensive at times, but done in a way that makes it clear the game is a parody and not trying to harm.

There is nothing wrong with an over the top and outrageous premise for a fighting game, it worked well for Mortal Kombat after all. However, a controversial premise alone is not enough for a game and therein lies a major problem. The game itself kinda sucks and just gets boring after only a few minutes..

The controls are basic at best, and feel sluggish and cumbersome. The amount of moves you can do is also limited and overall the fighting feels like a beta version of an unfinished game. I am reminded of the terrible fighting games released on the Wii U eshop, especially one called Steel Rivals. It was a weapon based fighter, but so utterly generic that I forgot about it till now (I actually spent about ten minutes trying to find the name of the game), and if not for its gimmick, Fight of Gods would be the same.

There is nothing here to hook you in terms of content. The gameplay gets old very fast and the gimmick can only work for so long. The game has an infamous reputation but its for the wrong reason. It is overpriced and underdeveloped and I feel I wasted the money I spent on it.  Fighting games, even bad ones, are addictive to me. So for me to say that a fighter got so boring and had no appeal after a few minutes is saying a lot.

Bottom line is that this game is best avoided. There are so many other great fighting games on PC and Switch, so to spend your money on this is to literally set it on fire just to watch it burn.
