When the TMNT was announced for Injustice 2, it proved to be a divisive announcement. Many felt the characters didn’t belong in a DC Comics fighting game, or wanted a different guest character, and I admit I didn’t see the addition as a good one. Now that the TMNT have been released for the game however, I have gotten chance to play and found my opinions changing.
The TMNT are the best use of the gear system in the entire game. The weapon equipped to the turtles is what determines which turtle you play as, and they are not pallete swaps of each other. Leo’is a great technical character, who is easy to learn but has and moves that are rather difficult to master,, while Don’s bo staff makes him the best at juggling of the entire roster. Mikey and Raph are more powerful but more risky to use, which is rather fitting with their typical characterizations in general.
Each character has a unique set of moves and abilities as well, and learning which one best suits your play style may take some time. I prefer Leo, not just because he was the easiest to learn, but because he was simply the most fun. I had a great time with him and Donnie, just pulling off moves and testing the characters out. The issues I had also didn’t come to much in the end, as the turtles just fit naturally somehow into the game. It helps that the turtles had a crossover with batman in comic form a few times in recent years, so there is precedent for this crossover.
I say that the TMNT are a truly worthy addition to Injustice 2. You get 4 characters for the price of one, via the gear system finally being used to its full potential, and at this point I wouldn’t mind it being used again in some form in the next Mortal Kombat game. If you were on the fence about TMNT in Injustice 2, rest assured that they do belong in the game!
