Occasionally a game will come along that will catch your eye and make you interested in playing, only for the end result to be less than spectacular. When I saw Dungeon Munchies in Nintendo’s Indie World showcase, I became immediately interested in it, as it seemed to have a good gimmick and interesting playstyle. A zombie raised by a necromancer chef must gather ingredients and craft recipes and equipment is an interesting premise, but the execution was flawed.

Dungeon Munchies has good visuals, and the combat seems intuitive at first, but the issues soon arise when it becomes clear how loose some of the controls are. Jumping onto platforms should not be as much of a challenge as it is, and yet jumping feels absolutely broken here. There were numerous times that I suffered a death in the game not due to my actions, but due to how unresponsive the game could be.

It is not all bad of course, as the premise of hunting down enemies to craft new recipes to get power is a good one, and the weapon system is rather diverse. The range of weapons is actually a high point here, as the game is able to suit multiple combat styles to suit a player’s preference. Add to that, the music, visuals and storytelling are all of high quality as well, which makes the unfinished nature of the game stand out.

And notice I said unfinished? That is because Dungeon Munchies is apparently an Early Access game with another third left to be finished. The game is still listed as Early Access on Steam and not mentioning that fact on the Switch release is very misleading. It is very likely that more would have patiently waited the way many are waiting for Getsufumaden: Undying Moon from Konami, which is also in Early Access on PC and coming soon to Switch.

As it stands now, I cannot recommend Dungeon Munchies as so much is left to be done. I am willing, however, to give it a second review later on when development is actually finished.
