Super Lucky’s Tale might have been a launch title for the Xbox One but it founds its home now on the Nintendo Switch. This game is a lovingly made old school style collectathon, and it sure is polished. Lucky is off to escape a new world and take down the evil Jinx and his Kitty Litter. In a wondrous adventure where Lucky will travel to quite a few worlds to save the day and return home. The opening of the game tells the tale of how Lucky was transported. It’s a lovingly crafted visual that shows what Lucky was up to before being dragged away. It also sets the player up for feeling bad that Lucky has been separated by those who hold him, dear. It pushes the player to take this adventure on in earnest and get the poor fox home.

Super Lucky’s Tale is a pretty simple game but is fun all the same. Players will run around different levels collecting coins, letters, and completing goals. By doing so players will collect golden four-leaf clovers, which are important if the player wants to 100% the game. These challenges are simple to do as they come from beating the worlds and I appreciate that.

There are a few different types of levels to be found. There are wider levels where Lucky must complete the normal wide array of objectives. But there are also puzzled based levels that depend on the world. In one world its puzzles, while in another Lucky is turned into a ball and dropped into a maze. These levels give Lucky a single page but that’s fine with me. It still feels like an achievement no matter how many pages the little fox picks up. Player’s will also find challenges to beat in the bigger levels. These challenges usually involve speedy platforming. It’s nice to mix things up with some quick action, and doing so is always worth it. Sometimes the trials do seem to end a little too quickly but Lucky never faces trouble for retrying them.

Collecting enough pages in a level unlocks the ability to face one of the Kitty Litter. Each door takes more pages but the pages are only counted from the world the player is in. The bosses, of course, each have their gimmick and its nice to take down each of them. While not too challenging, players will have to figure out how to defeat the bosses and might need to try again. Another nice thing about this game is that there are costumes for the player to unlock. After beating the first level, the player’s will find Geovanni in the hub world. Geovanni will sell the player different costumes that add just a hint of customization. They don’t do anything for Lucky but it is nice to have costumes for him to wear. Some of these costumes are unlocked later in the game, and they are bigger rewards in and of themselves. Though some of the costumes leave a little to be desired as they are just odd choices.

One big issue I had was that the game glitched in the first level. This effectively made me have to play through the level again. While not a big issue, or use of time, it’s a red flag to see a game glitch like that so easily. Though luckily I was able to simply close out the game and open it again, and the glitch didn’t reappear. It isn’t that big an inconvenience and it didn’t bother me truly.

The voice acting in this game is reminiscent of older platformers. Usually just random sounds and animal noises, which work for this game. There are quite a few characters who each have their way of speaking too. It’s fun to see these characters and imagine what they’d sound like if they were speaking. The music in this game is also great and it’s rather interesting. I enjoyed listening to music as I explored the different levels. The different locales each offer their musical feeling and it’s nice seeing how the music changes with each world. I was reminded of older platformers simply because the music was quite good.

Super Lucky’s Tale is a game worth playing but it might not be as hard, as some might hope but that’s okay. It’s a solid coming of age adventure that tells a cute story of a fox in a strange world. This game looks quite beautiful and it’s nice to see this kind of platformer on the Switch. With a wide array of worlds to explore and a home to get back to will the player help Lucky out?
