Arcade Archives has brought many great games to modern consoles and in some cases, this includes games coming west for the first time. USAAF Mustang is one such example, being a shmup that was released only in Japan by NMK in arcades and ported to the Mega Drive by Taito and NK. This first-time release in the west gives a look into a lesser-known shmup, and it is actually a very decent one.

USAAF Mustang sees players take control of a USAAF pilot in WWII in the form of a horizontal shmup. Compared to a game like Bio-Ship Paladin, USAAF Mustang is rather basic in terms of what is offered. But at the same time, the game is expertly polished and refined with the result being extremely satisfying.

USAAF Mustang only gives players one weapon and one type of bomb, but that is all that is needed here. Enemy design and placement are done well and provide a worthy challenge for gamers. There are some decent obstacles to overcome but nothing that cannot be solved with skill.

Levels are well designed with a unique aspect to them, and the music in the game fits perfectly. The animation is also a standout here and the inclusion of a two-player mode manages to make the game fun in multiple ways. This is a game people can enjoy on their own or with a friend and get a different experience both times.

USAAF Mustang also shows that shmups do not need to be overly designed and complicated to have depth. This is a back-to-basics approach compared to some shmups at the time, and in doing so manages to feel special. It is a shame that this was left in Japan until now because it could have done well in arcades in the west.

USAAF Mustang comes recommended, not just for shmup fans but also for non-fans to see why the genre is as fun as it is. There is nothing overly complicated here and success in the game all depends on skill, showing the pure essence of what the genre is supposed to be. Make sure to check this one out.
